What is a Letter of Appreciation and Certificate of Appreciation?

I actually never received a physical copy or ever seen these certificates and letters that were "awarded" to me. What are they how did I "earn" them? I'm a Marine veteran and was in an Artillery unit, if that helps.

A Letter of Appreciation is a memo written by someone to commend you for something. A Certificate of Appreciation is the same thing but in award "certificate" form. Dunno about the Marines but in the Army the form for a Certificate is the same one that we use to put award of medals on.
