why do people think the "AK-47" is still in use today even by terrorists?

the original AK-47 and the prototype AK-46 haven't been used since the 50's. theres so much more AK's that are likely to be in use like the AK-74, AK-63, AKM, AKS, AKS-74U, AK-103, AK-107 ext.. why do people still think anyone uses AK-47's anymore.

Um.. because they do? The AK-47 is the most common rifle in the hands of insurgents - more commonly used than all variants and other rifles combined. Old doesn't always mean obsolete - the AK-47 can take a beating like nothing else. Its cheap to produce, easy to acquire, ammunition is plentiful, and the rifle can withstand the environment better than anything else they could easily get.

Not to mention the fact that A LOT of the weapons used by Afghan insurgents today are leftovers from stockpiles kept since the Soviet occupation ended.

The AK-47 was the most widely produced weapon of it's series. There are more AK-47's in the world than every other AK-variant combined. As they are so old, most have filtered down into the hands of those that can get them. IE the poor in 3d world countries. The vast majority of the AKs I have seen, confiscated or picked up off of dead insurgents have been standard AK-47's. And yes I do know the difference between them.

The main difference between an AK-47 and an AKM is that the former has a milled steel receiver while the latter has a stamped steel receiver.

Many countries still use a milled receiver, because it is more durable. Finland still uses an AK-47 variant with a milled receiver.

AK-47 production ended in 1959, replaced by the AKM for the next 20 years but there are still millions around.

it still exist. its updated.( modern warfare2) besides i own an AK model looking gun EAA PAP. i call it an AK because no one knows what an EAA PAP is. its just common knowledge. u say AK and ppl think of that gun. you dont say EAK 74 or whatever that confuses ppl. u say an ak 47 to the common citizen but EAA PAP to a gun buff. there are thousands of different AK models out there. because it shoots a great caliber. a 308 round with smaller cartridge. its powerful and is widely produced cuz of so many (ak guns) out there. thus its cheap for countries military to buy and use in war without going in great debt. its Russian preferd caliber. they use all types of aks like we use m16. America has an m16, ar 15, hk m416, m4, and so on. much like the ak. hope this helps.

Because terrorists and insurgents aren't really formal military organizations, they use what they can get their hands on. Its not like they can just call up a local gun shop and buy their equipment in bulk they are after all illegal organizations. Most if not all of their equipment are illegally obtained, and AK - 47's are one of the most common illegal weapons in circulation.

Technically you're right, but many groups still use the old wooden grip Aks which people associate with the 47 model.

probably becuase the people saying it dont know much about weapons in which case im like Who Cares??? unless u knowa shyt load about guns most people cannot tell u the difference if u put all those guns if front of them....of course most people see these guns from far away so this makes it even harder to determine they are not ak-47's...another thing is terrorist (aka gangsta rappas) always rap about them so people think all terrorist use ak-47's lmao....

Makes no never mind to me to be honest, but I do care about the round that went through my shoulder way back in late 2005 in Mosul, a 7.62 round hit me. I could care less about what weapon it was, it sucked either way, but thankfully retired a few years ago and am now free of being shot at.

I think you need to do a little more research. Although slightly different from the original from '45, it is still the #1 produced automatic rifle worldwide.

Because I was in Africa in the 1970-80s and we still used WWII surplus.
