Question:
What are Mercenaries?
Nick
2011-08-27 04:25:57 UTC
I know people have played as them in video games and I know that they still exist today, but I don't know much more than that.

Is there a difference between "hitmen" that mobsters use and "Mercenaries"?
Is the politically correct term for them "Contractors" or "Private Security Personnel" or something else?
Is it true that a lot of them are ex-military?
Is it true that they exist within the united states?
Are there any branches of the military using hired mercenaries to preform operations?
Is it true our government trained many of the Cuban Mercenaries that exist today?

Any EDUCATED answers are welcome.

Legally yes absolutely, an assassin preforms an illegal task, ie murder for money whereas a Mercenary is, typically, a professional soldier who fights for a national government for financial compensation, making what he does as legal as any soldier in a national army. Morally, it might be a bit murkier.

Is the politically correct term for them "Contractors" or "Private Security Personnel" or something else?

Contractors, Private Military Contractors, Private Security Personnel, pretty much anything other than "Mercenary"

Is it true that a lot of them are ex-military?

Yes, Blackwater (now Xe Services) was founded by a Navy SEAL and aggressively recruits former special forces from America and around the world notably Chile for operations in combat zones. Dyncorp requires people to have served in law enforcement since they train police This saves the PMC (Private Military Company) the expense of training raw recruits and gives them recruits that qualify for security clearances

Is it true that they exist within the united states?

Yes absolutely, Dyncorp and Xe are the biggest, Xe, then Blackwater was actually deployed to New Orleans after hurricane Katrina

Are there any branches of the military using hired mercenaries to preform operations?

All of them use PMCs, private contractors, cook, do laundry, drive supply trucks and provide security for all branches of the US military, this allows the US to deploy the military without having use a draft to fill these jobs

Is it true our government trained many of the Cuban Mercenaries that exist today?

I don't know. I know the US trained a lot of Cubans for THe Bay of Pigs, but I'm not sure what happened afterwards

Mercenaries are paid army's. Mobsters are like a group of guys how kill rob do drugs all that good stuff. Hit men are assassins and is one person hired to kill people were as Mercenaries are a group of people. Yes they do hire lots of x-military. Yes some of them do exist within the U.S. but our government dose its best to make sure they don't. Yes there are branches of military using mercenaries.

Hitmen, contractors, mercenaries, private security personnel, etc... it's all the same. They're privately funded soldiers who serve the highest bidder.

Branches of the military do not hire mercenaries, but the government has been known to pay mercenaries for jobs.

Yes they exist within the US... search Blackwater.

Ex-military? Most of the time, yes.

Mercenaries, are paid soldiers, hired by a company, bussiness, or another country, to fight in another country, usually in support of civil wars, tribal factions, and coups. The U.S. Does not use or support mercenaries, however, CIA, may contract out, but, will never admit. As far as Cubans, that waS back when Preident Kennenedy was president, and the U.S. Trained cubans in military training, that left Cuba, to invade cuba, to fight Castro, and communists, but, failed. Private companies,do hire ex-military, because of their expertise and training, but, more for security, Mercinaries, are just paid soldiers, paid to fight, or hired to fight, usually, and most often against another country., but, they do not represent a country. Just ex- Soldiers, that go from country to country, and use their skills for money, for anyone who will hire them, no matter the cause.

Mercenary outfits are militant organisations that hide under the pretense of corporate control.

They just work for whoever pays them.

Obviously the government can pay them in ways other than financial incentives of course.

They are everywhere in the world. Most of them are some kind of ex military. They are considered neutral. They dont have sides or opinions, they just do whatever they are paid to do and thats it. The government does use them, more then likely in dangerous, no survival type operations. The only training they get is on their own, the us government only trains US service men and women
