Question:
Army special forces support - wear tab?
2011-05-26 23:21:58 UTC
I am going to a special forces unit 1st group in fort lewis here shortly. I have gotten mixed answers all from other people who are in the unit, were in the unit, and just regular soldiers. if you are airborne qualified but not SF qualified, you wear the maroon beret with their yellow flash and crest of course. on your unit patch that normally has the sword, airborne tab, and SF tab, does the airborne qualified only soldier wear the special forces part of the tab just not wear a green beret. I have been told you get to wear it because it is part of the unit patch, but you dont get to wear the green beret until you are qualified, can anyone give a clear understanding of this?

Special Forces, meaning active special forces assigned to a special forces unit, get to wear the Green Beret. All soldiers with the special forces training wear the tab.

It all depends on where you are assigned. If you're in an Airborne Unit (101st or 82nd) you wear the maroon and the airborne tab. If you are Special Forces you wear the SF tab and you don't have an airborne tab. You wear your jump wings.

Airborne tabs are part of the unit patch. They're designed seperate, but they are a part of the unit. The beret is dependent on the unit you are assigned.

Edit: You add the tab only after having completed the service school. Before that you're just in a unit. You wear your unit patch, and the correct beret of your unit. There are no units that have 'Special Forces' in the Unit Patch because it's a skill tab. So even after leaving a SF unit and moving on to a different unit the skill tab is still worn, even if the unit patch isn't. But someone who was 82nd Airborne would not wear the Airborne tab because it's not a skill tab, but a part of the unit patch.

But all of the 82nd wear a marroon beret, even if they don't have their jump wings. (the beret is unit specific, not individual specific)

Does that make more sense?

You have to go to SFAS (Special Forces Assessment and Selection), complete it and then get selected to attend special forces training. Note that successfully completing SFAS does NOT mean that you'll get selected..... If you're not already airborne qualified you'll be sent to airborne school between SFAS and SFQC. You will then go to the SFQC (Special Forces Qualification Course) which is anywhere from about 18 months to 3 years long depending on which specific special forces MOS they choose for you. If you successfully graduate from SFQC you get the tab. The "green beret" is worn by people with the special forces tab..... IF they're assigned to a special forces unit. If they are BOTH tabbed and in an SF unit they wear the green beret. If you're assigned to an SF unit but are not tabbed (these would be support personnel like admin techs, cooks, parachute riggers, etc) you wear a maroon beret, all airborne units wear maroon. This would also apply to the special forces training units. The guys going through SFQC would not be tabbed, but are in an SF unit. So they'd wear maroon. Well, authorized to. Not like you do a lot of parades or stuff in SFQC. While the instructors would wear green. If you have an SF tab and are assigned to a special operations command, like USSOCOM or USASOCOM you wear the green beret. If you don't have an SF tab but do have a Ranger tab AND used to be assigned to the 75th and are in that position you'd wear the tan beret. Otherwise, maroon. Likewise, if you do have an SF tab and used to be SF but are no longer in an SF unit for whatever reason you do NOT wear the green beret. If you're assigned to a regular unit you'll wear a patrol cap like everyone else. If you're in an airborne unit you'll wear a maroon beret like everyone else, SF tab or not. About the only exception to that is ROTC instructors and if I recall recruiters. Though you won't see too many SF tabbed recruiters. Some, there was an SF tabbed recruiter at the recruiting station I went in through, but not many. The SF tab though is not like the Ranger tab which is awarded to anyone from any MOS in any assignment who completes Ranger school. Ranger school and the Ranger Regiment share a name, other than that they have nothing in common. Special Forces and the "green beret" however in essence are the same thing. All "green berets" will be wearing an SF tab. But not even most people wearing a Ranger tab will be wearing a tan beret, and plenty of people wear the tan beret in the 75th who don't have Ranger tabs.

Special Forces units have more than just operators in them. There are many support roles that are in the units such as admin, cooks, maintenance, etc. You can belong to the SF unit and not be SF qualified and will not wear the tab.

No. I have seen alot of soldiers bearing the SF arrowhead but no tab. The SF tab is like the Ranger tab, you can wear it over any unit, but if you haven't earned it you don't just get to wear it just because its your unit. Same as Rangers who have never been to Ranger school can't wear the tab.
