My boyfriends brother in-law is in the military (marines). His sister is always bragging about how good of a life she has since he's in the military. Is military life really that great, or is she just trying to make him jealous?

My husband has been in the army for a while...its actually not that bad...some benefits are really great. but its not always GREAT! most of the times its actually not that great at all
and its really not for everybody....you have to make alot of sacrifices!
the worse thing is, that they are always gone for so long(excluding deployments!!)
My husband is done in may 09 but he will get stop lossed....that iraq AGAIN. just to tell you about the negative sides of the military.
some ppl can handle it..others cant.
I can handle it for a while...but im really happy when he is done =)
I would love him to be at home when I come home from work lol
oh and furthermore...I have to be thankful, because I actually met him overseas...cuz he was stationed in germany...so without the army, we wouldnt be together :)

Actually, not too bad. The work is steady. Great benefits. Generous and early retirement. Good civilian benefits, including being able to get a home without paying a down payment.
And the chance is relatively small that you'll get hurt in a shooting war. Even when there is a war, only a small percentage is in a combat zone.
I've seen too many buddies come out of the service, only to go back in.
Everybody goes on and on about college but good steady work that protects the worker is a nice thing to have.

The quality of life is good. The Marines are becoming more and more family orientated. Free health care, good dental plan. The housing isn't that bad, steady paycheck, good retirement, TS plan, etc. You have movies, bowling, and other activities on the base. Its like its own little world. You get privileges to the PX, and commissary (and yes groceries are cheaper there).
Overall its a good life. Deployments suck. But you gotta take the good with the bad. There are good DOD schools on base for your kids to attend. Its pretty good.

Yes it is all that great, my father is 48 and has retired from the Marine Corps(20 years), i'm 16 and I see the benefits first hand already. We have base housing, lessened health and dental care, privileges on the base(free gym etc.) Also if you retire you get retirement checks around $16,000(yearly). Him being in the Marine Corps has gave way for me to have a government job already on the base. My dad has always told me that he chose to join the military because of all the benefits and he knew that if he would of gotten hurt in a war or killed that his family would be taken care of.

It depends on your job, duty station, your Sergeants and Commanders, as well as the friends you make.
If you can make the best of it, then yeah, it is good. Otherwise, it will be terrible.
I traveled a lot when I was in Europe. I went to 13 different countries. But I had a job I did not like (Truck Driver, 88M)
I was in the best shape of my life.
I went to Iraq and I now get benefits because of my time in combat. I saw some interesting and cool things over there.
Although someone blew up my truck one time and I got shot at. Even still those were cool experiences which I will never forget.

Honestly Military life and the Marines is great, but don't do it via someone else. It is better to be in than be a spectator

I spent 8 yrs in the military and it was very good to me. But I'm glad to be out now. Life is what you make it.

there are good aspects to it- free health and dental, no utilities or rent to pay, steady paycheck.
And since she isn't in the marines herself, she doesn't have to put up with the same stuff he does. she pretty much gets a free ride - being a military dependant is a great career for a lazy mooch.
