Can you hear a submarine's active sonar while underwater?

Hypothetical situation: you're under the water, as is a submarine. It uses its active sonar, letting off a few pings. Would you be able to hear it? If so, how far on average could you be and still hear it?
Thank you.

You could hear other submarines and animals like whale with special headphones they use or speakers they could probably play throughout the sub with the ability to pick up the sounds, but as far as hearing it with just your ears no, maybe the whales though.
Im almost guessing, but it would seem to be right.

Of course it would depend on how far away you were, but yes. The active sonar on U.S. Submarines can range from 215 - 235 decibels. That's pretty loud.

If you are in a sub and you hear another's active sonar, you are in trouble. Of course hunting subs rarely use active sonar, it can be tracked back to the source.

in keeping with threat, in keeping with threat no longer. you may get an ultrasonic intensity meter/fish finder which you are able to not hear. On a huge deliver you utilize a fog horn it is impossible to forget approximately. Submarines use lots of equipment, consisting of a few they gained't communicate approximately.

another submarine could hear it easily .. and from much farther away than the first submarine could detect the second.

Hypothetical answer : it depends on how good your detection gear is. Yes, you could hear it. As far as distance, who knows, and all that crap is part scientific and part classified.
