Here's my predicament, I'm enlisting in the USMC, USAF, or USN in a few months. I plan on doing this for 20 years. I want a hands on job, a job where I feel like I'm really making a difference. Like infantry or field artillery. They get to actually hunt down the bad guys and take them out. But I've heard they hey treated like absolute **** and are horrible for those with a family. Which obviously doesn't appeal to me. Don't get ne wrong, I'm not taking away from anyone in the service. I know that all jobs are very important but I just don't want a boring tedious job that I don't feel like I'm directly defending my country.. can anyone tell me some good jobs that I can feel like I'm really making a difference?

Right off the bat, Air force and Navy don't do much along the lines of infantry or field artillery, thats more along the lines of Army and Marine Corps.

Your job depending on what you choose will make a diffrence in one way or another. If you are a grunt then your the one on patrols,if you are personnel other than a grunt you are supporting that grunt.

For the most part there can be a certain monotony in the military (annual training, job specific tasks) but its like anything else, If you think it sucks then it sucks, however if you think its cool then it is cool.

Grunts dont usually get the best treatment in general if your in the field you wont get the best treatment.

Talk to a recruiter see what jobs you can do/ are interested in, worst case you can switch jobs.It isnt easy but it can be done.

Like the others have said- any job makes a difference.

Unlike what Liberals want to believe- the US military (and most likely our close allies) leave things better than they found them.

In Iraq, we left new water and sewage treatment plants along with schools and 1st world infra-structure.

Sea Bees are always doing projects for the locals where we're deployed.

Medical are helping not only our military, but local civilians with minor medical and inoculations.

Nothing would get done without the supplies sent on ship, planes and trucks.

i'm not an expert at this stuff, but this seems like common sense. Any job in the military where you directly kill the enemy is bad for a family, because one: you'll be away for long periods of time killing 'bad guys', and two: the bad guys could kill you. Also, in twenty years your body might not be in as good of shape, just naturally, and you might not be able to hunt down enemies. If you have dormant heart problems that might pop up in fifteen years, that might be a problem too. I'd reccomend air force, becauase it seems less dangerous to me.

Every job makes a difference. For example, I was a computer repair technician in the Air Force. Without my computer the radar and communications systems would not function. Without those, the jet fighter pilots could not have run their sorties and troops on the ground would die. The same idea would apply to any job including vehicle repair, cooks or whatever.
