Question:
Do Marines need a type of sticker on their car to get on base?

My boyfriend is a marine and he tells me he has to have a type of sticker on his car for him to drive back on base. I want to know if this is the truth. I looked into it on google and it says military personnel can get on base by showing a decal or a Common Access Card which is like their I.D. My boyfriend said someone stole his sticker right off his car. I was telling my co-worker ( who is a marine wife) about his sticker and she said you don't need a sticker to get on base, she and her husband get on all the time without showing anything. All I want to know is if that is just an excuse my boyfriend makes up. Thanks.

Every USMC base I have been too prefers their Marines to have a perm DoD tag on their vehicle.

Now, they do have temp paper ID's to put in the window. However, usually the MP or DoD guard requires their ID at the same time. Recently the base general at Camp Lejeune complained in an interview that morning on base traffic would flow easier if every Marine would get the base tag instead of wasting time with ID check. They are redoing the entire front entrance to Camp Lejeune, he was commenting on that. It is easier for traffic flow to have the DoD sticker in the window, HENCE why they prefer you to get a base tag. Red= enlisted. Blue= officer.

What base is he at?

Edit: Why don't you trust your boyfriend? He isn't lying and your "friend" is partially wrong. They do prefer people to have their base tags. It also makes it easier for MP's to know who is trespassing or not on base. Your friend and her husband who just "drive on" do not have anything denoting on their car once they past the front gate that they have legal rights to be there. It can be a pain to MP's at some point in time.

You need to listen to your bf over your friend. The military prefers them to have base tags. It proves the car belongs on base and has insurance and registration.

He is telling the truth. It is a DoD sticker that everyone who owns a car/truck has to have. You register your vehicle on base and they give you the sticker. Even civilian employees have a similar DoD sticker. Civilians have the green ones...noted above was red/enlisted and blue/officer.

I was in the Navy and had a sticker. I need the same type of sticker for any military base that I entered I went to Marine, AF, Navy, and Marine Corps bases. Now that I am a veteran I can not go back on base with out a sponsor...that is what happens when you get out. They didn't scrape my sticker off it expired...and they check to see if it is current when you enter the base.

I don't know how your friend the Marine wife gets on with out a sticker unless it is an open base or if she knows everyone and the guards recognize her....but even then you need a sticker.

I stood duty at the front gate and it was one of my duties to check and I checked even if I knew the person...I had to tell them to get it fixed.

There was a time before 9/11 that you did not need to show something to get on base, but now, at even the smallest bases if you do not have your DoD sticker then you must show your ID card or if you are an invited guest you show your Driver's license.

Just a thought, if this is how you feel about your "boyfriend" you might want to consider moving on. You have to have trust.

If he doesn't have a base DoD sticker that is up to date he will have to show that his registration and insurance is up to date every time he goes through that gate which holds up lines and might make him late to work. Your boyfriend is right and he does have to have his up to date base sticker on his car in order to get on base without having MPs question him every time he gets on base

That Marine wife who told you its not necessary is dead wrong. And if they do get on base all the time without one and just having an ID their car must have something wrong like lack of insurance to not be able to get on base. Or the walk on base not using a car or something. This knowledge is common sense if she really is a wife.

Why do you believe its a lie? Have a bit more confidence in your man, if you lack that kinda petty trust then why be with him?

On Camp Pendleton, pretty much anyone can get on base with the proper identification. However, there are a few gates that you cannot go through without car decals.

If your boyfriend has a temp. pass on his vehicle then he needs to go down to the JRC to receive the proper decals.

Pendleton is one of the easiest bases to get onto, but service members are "required" have have their vehicles registered on base and to have the proper decals.

depends on the base. most Non AF bases DO require a sticker in addition to a military ID. and having the sticker stolen is actually not as uncommon as you would think for precisely just that reason..access to base.

he has to report the theft to base security.

yes the sticker is on the outside.

Some Marine bases need your DNA, but if you don;t have the post sticker on your car, then you need to have current driver license, tags and insurance and submit yourself to an inspection (and give a sample of your DNA-LOL) to get on post, if they find weapons in your car, they take them.
