he's still going through tests and stuff but i'm just wondering since he feels strongly he will get accepted and he will swear in...how long after they leave for basic training do you know what their address is to write and send care packages is? Do you get a big packet or something with all the information? and how long will they be without contact?
These are just questions everyone has avoided answering when i ask.

I didn't know your husband was going into the military! How awesome and thank you for being one of those who serve our country.
It takes a few weeks before you get an address, but you should know what base he'll be going to before he leaves. When Robert joined I had an address when he sent me his first letter two weeks after he left. Care packages aren't usually accepted during basic training. You do get some information though about what to expect and how long he will be gone as well as Tricare enrollment forms.
There is no phone calls from what I remember, at least not in basic training. I think letters are the only way to keep in touch for the duration of the training. But things may have changed since my husband was in.
Most of all, if you need someone to talk to or find out information from, especially if your husband joins the Army, please please feel free to email me :) Love ya Val!

When I was at basic we called to say we were safe. Then, the recruiters send you a address which usually is not accurate. BTW i am in Army. But, I found out it took about two weeks for my family to get a letter I sent a week before. Same with my fiance who is in the navy now. See while you are in bunk for the first week when you are in bed you really are supposed to be sleeping. I managed to hide light under blanket. The packet yes you should get within a week or a little more. This lets you know graduation date, also, how many people can attend the basic training graduation. It is hard being on the receiving and sending end. Trust me though, it will be fine. What doesn't kill us only makes us stronger.

He'll get one call when he gets there to let family know he is ok and then he'll be processed in. After a few days they'll give him an address so you can write to him and it'll be in your hands in about 1 weeks time. As for how long of a wait until he ships out, that varies and could be as long as 1 year or as little as a few weeks, you'll have to ask him what his recruiter says. I'd probably avoid the care packages until he says yea or nay depending on his DI's (Marines) or Drill Sgts (Army) and what they say can go.

I don't know what they do in other branches but at Air Force basic, they send home a postcard during the first week or so with the address on there. Usually they get to call sometime within the first 2 days or so to tell you that they made it safely and so on. Calls after that will be according to their instructor. Normally there are a few more "mandatory" calls for graduation info and other processing info. Calls from then on will be considered a privilege.

No Care Packages! Just letters. Wherever he's enlisting in you can already know how to mail a letter to him. I don't know where exactly, but somewhere on one of the branches ".mil" sites it shows you how to mail a letter to your recruit. It'll go by something like: rct. "blah blah" something company, something battalion, something recruiting station. This is loosely based on what the address actually looks like. I was just surfing through the Marines Paris Island official site and saw that very question answered.

What service? West Coast? East Coast?
You can send power bars in the Marines but the amount has to be the amount of recruits in the platoon.

the first thing they the DI's do is send a letter to their home of record with that info.
P.S. don't send "care packages" to boot camp.....but write lots of letters.
