Calling "at ease " for the 1st Sgt or "attention" for the commander is a courtesy to the highest ranking in the room. If your commander is already in the room you do not call the room to "at ease," bt you still acknowledge and greet the 1st Sgt.

No! that is considered disrespect to the commander. You call attention for any officer entering an area or a room, but you do not have to call at ease if there is an officer or a higher ranking NCO in the area. Also remember that if a higher ranking NCO or an officer comes in to the area, you have to call attention or at ease (respectively) again to recognize the higher ranking person.

Try AR 600-25 Army customs and courtesies, or FM 3-21.5 Drill and Ceremonies

You do not call "at ease" for the 1st SGT or anyone else if there is a senior officer or NCO present. CSM do not "at ease" for 1st SGT

Normally ....in a work area such as an office or mess area ..... you call "at ease" when an officer enters as long as there is no officer of senior rank present...

The calling of "at ease" when the 1st SGT or CSM enter the area is a courtesy.....but only rendered when no one senior is present

I wouldn't think so...but it was a long time since I was Army Guard..

I transferred to the Navy and the Navy doesn't call at ease for enlisted. Not even a Master Chief....we probably would stand but not call out any thing.

We only call "attention on deck" for officers...but you don't call it if a senior officer is present...say if the CO or XO is in the room and a more junior officer comes in you wouldn't call it...it is disrespectful to the senior officer.

I tried to google your regs...couldn't find it. It seems that common sense would kick in.

Wouldn't it be disrespectful to the Army Officer in the room if you called "At Ease" for an NCO? Even if they were the First Sgt?
