What do they check if you're up for a confidential security clearance? Do you need references? And if so, what kind of references? I'm just curious about it since I'll join the military soon, I'm not in any sort of financial trouble or anything, so I know that won't stop me for a security clearance...anyways thanks in advance.

I worked briefly in for intel in my battalion when I was in the Marine Corps, so I know the kind of stuff they check. As someone just popping in off the streets in hopes to enlist, you'll be subject to having a Secret level security clearance. Simply answer all the questions truthfully, and that's it.

As the level of security goes up, so does the price. Security clearances are really expensive, and the price jumps up with each level of security. Why? Because there's more in-depth information that needs to be found out, and people need to find it out. For example, I knew a guy who needed a Top Secret level security clearance, and he was originally from Guatemala (he was a US citizen, and not a dual citizen, so he was eligible for TS). Unless dead, your parents will be interviewed, and because his parents lived in Guatemala, someone needed to fly out there and interview them.

Don't be stupid and don't try to hide anything. There have been people who have tried to hide things that don't render you ineligible, but because they hid it they became ineligible for their clearance as they weren't truthful in filling out the forms.

There will be no polygraph for you. Its not until the secret security clearance that they really start looking into you and the Top Secret when they start talking with people you dont even talk with anymore. Dont lie, give them the correct information, and you will do fine. Everyone in the military has this done unless they are Officers (secret security clearance) or need a TS security clearance (SF, SPECOPS, MI, etc). They will look for the basics such as warrants, tickets, financial issues etc but nothing more really.

if your clean then your ok its the least of the checks they do on you, so they wont be talking to neighbors or do any firld interviews on you. They'll just do a check in the national database and state and local agencies to see if you have commited any crimes. have you been fingerprinted after being arrested or have you gone to jail? these two things will pop up when they run your fingerprints at MEPS. my advice is dont lie cause theyll find out then youll get fraudelent enlistment. gl though

No, its not you bringing information to them, its them collecting information on you. Depending on your job you might have to go as far as setting up for a lie-detector test.

Otherwise, they will check your background, including though not limited to: work history, school history, family background, bank accounts, credit report, bills, if you have ever been involved with legal issues. Make sure all your skeletons are out of the closet.

Cheers.
