Question:
Enlisting, and need the truth about picking your job in the different U.S.military branches?

I've recently taken my ASVAB and scored extremely well on it, AFQT being 85. I've decided to enlist, but still not entirely sure what branch to go in mostly because I'm not sure what's the truth and what's not from the recruiter. since my dad, him being in the army, said recruiters are known to lie to get you in. I simply just want to know the truth before I potentially make a decision I regret. Anyway, I literally qualify for everything the Army has to offer, as well as the Air Force. Now my army recruiter said that when I pick my job before I enlist, it's reserved and I will 100 percent get that job. Now when I went to the Air Force center, they said that the Army guarantees "training" in that field, not the job itself. The Air force recruiter even said his son enlisted into the Army with his selected job, and ended up working at the base gates checking I.D.s for 3 years straight right after basic. Now the Air Force recruiter said that once I enlist into the AF I would then choose my job preferences from a list they give me in basic with everything I can do, which I'm sure I'll get a lot due to my scores, MAGE scores all 80 and above. I also want to be a pilot and the AF recruiter said they are currently looking to train more pilots, so if you have any information on that as well please let me know, as well as if it's easier to become a pilot in the Army or the Air Force, preferably flying a plane, and what jobs will accelerate me to become a pilot. Thank you!

I was a Navy Hospital Corpsman, and I have stood duty at the front gate checking ID's....but that was just during duty...most of the time I worked in Sick Call or some other medically related job.

Everyone has the potential to stand duty at the front gate no matter what branch you are in and no matter what job you actually have. There are times when the threat com is elevated and all hands have to stand some type of other duty that involves security....it is the freaking military for crying out loud.

Most of the time the Army will train you for a certain job, and that is the job that you will do...they don't like to spend money training you to do something else....but there are duties that have to be done by everybody...and you will occasionally have to do them.

As far as being a pilot, you have to be an officer with a bachelor's degree to do that. You can not enlist to be a pilot. The exception is that the Army will allow you to enlist then train to be a helicopter pilot but then you would become a warrant officer....there are special requirements to that one. It is not a typical enlisted job.

The only thing that will "accelerate you to be a pilot" is to go to college (and get an ROTC program/scholarship) and become an officer. The Air Force does not train enlisted people to become pilots...

Pilots in the AF are OFFICERS(with a STEM Degree) with a COMMISSION. if you enlist you will NEVER be a pilot.

Army has WOFT: helicopter pilots and NO COMMISSION NECESSARY( although a college degree certainly gives you a huge leg up) it also has pound for pound more total pilots than the AF does

NO BRANCH will 100% guarantee that you will only do your job. ALL ranches guarantee you TRAINING in a specific job. graduating and getting qualified is YOUR responsibility

AF will give you a field such as mechanical. the Army will tell you you will be a helicopter mechanic or a tank mechanic. .

You're enlisting. You will be enlisted. You can not fly so get that out of your head now. You need a 4 year degree and either the Academies, ROTC, or OTS to be able to fly. So odds are you won't be flying.

IDK about the Army, I'm Air Force so I'll give you what I know.

Before you even ship out you'll most likely have your job picked out for you. When you go to MEPs you put down 10 career fields from the jobs you qualify for based on physical abilities and your ASVAB scores. A few months later depending on what jobs you put down, and what your recruiter is available to get you'll get your job and ship date. So you'll get a choice of your top 10 jobs to get... guaranteed.

The other option is to go open. Which means you'll get a general field of medical, electrical, mechanical, or general and you'll go to BMT and week 7 you'll find out what job you get. So if you go in Open Medical you'll have some type of medical job. If you go in open mechanical you'll get some type of mechanical job.

The army is the only branch where an enlistee has any hope at all of working his way up to pilot (WOFT). The army is way better about jobs.

The army will train you for you desired job. As long as you don't flunk the training, you should be fine. I never did those duties myself. Don't forget. If you cannot handle stress and pressure, the military is not for you.

The Navy guarantees you a job but you must maintain you eligibility and graduate "A" School.......
