Question:
Is the USA "Empire" the shortest-lived empire ever?

It only achieved hegemony in 1989 and is already on the slide with the rise of other economic super powers, the crippling effects of the credit crunch and its disastrous involvement in Iraq.

The British Empire lasted nearly 400 years.

Go figure.

the u.s is not a empire

it's a weak country with alot of weapons

if it was a super power it would of been off oil

and everyone would be rich and happy.

the U.S has already been taking over

it can't even keep people out.

Haha, the credit crisis will bring an end to the US?

Forget the silly remark that the US is an empire. This is just hilarious!

What was that again? Did you say 1929? Did America enjoy greatest ever rises in GDP, standard of living and sovereign power after 1929? Nooo, really?! Way cool!

To all of you "The US is very evil, ans is soon to disappear"-sayers. You must be the most stupid people among us. I'm lost for words on your stupidity. I dont know from where such things are being preached from. Surely, socialist groups all over America is a candidate.

America is the richest country in the world, you dumbasses. How about most powerful, and the single country in the world, that has secured freedom and life for others to enjoy, and is no now in Iraq and Afghanistan?

Is this a case of wishful thinking? Do you really want the US to go bankrupt (how silly the thought might be)? I really can see no other explanation to your stupid remarks, and it is truly a psycho opinion.

From where do you get this enjoyment of preaching death over America? I really can't understand your pathetic minds.

I'm from Denmark, and everything in this country is America. Not because it's forced upon us, but because we love it. Not a single show or film on TV is not American. Our favorite products from popular culture are all American. Our heroes are American. Our dreams are American - I know nobody who does not wish to attend an American high school or college, and id older they'd all (most) like to work in places like New York or Los Angeles. Everybody wants to go on vacation in the US, yet not many has gone there.

You got it wrong.

The US is not an Empire. It is the fighting force, the guts, the one with resolve, courage to do the dirty work of the First World along with England.

The First World is an Empire now and it will last. Though the Third World is exploding in population. Though a chaotic religion of extreme measures and hypocrisy threatens this by sheer numbers and a willingness to die just to murder.

First, the US has only been a nation for a little over 200 years, so comparing it to the British Empire is hardly relevant. Second, the US has never had a goal of being any sort of empire. "Go figure."

What kind of question is this? Why are you chomping at the bit for America to fall? Why do you think that America is no longer an empire?

Why are you comparing America to the Brits? Are you a Briton yourself and you've got to jump on the European bandwagon by blaming the U.S. for the world's ills even though you've got a sovereign nation that's responsible for its own decisions?

Get an original thought.

Do you get your news from the same source as that whacko who leads Iran?? Or are you stuck on fantasy island?? We are a democracy not an empire. Maybe a misguided democracy but a democracy for sure. An empire would be that nation in Africa Zembabay or how ever they spell it. If you don't like it here no one is making you stay!

The US isn't an empire first off haha. And other superpowers are rising which is no different then decades past - contries continue to get stronger. We're not on "the slide" though by any means. We still are the worlds foremost military power and are so far ahead of the next country it's not even funny.

The question suggests to me a sense of supreme hatred born of a powerful envy, in that the US is able to achieve such domination *without* an empire.

There is not now, nor has there ever been a US empire. Therefore your question cannot be answered. Sort of like asking what shade of green is a stop light.

Empire =/= hegemony. The British Empire was never an unrivaled world power. At its earlier stages, it was much weaker than France and Spain.

The USA was an imperial power almost from the get-go. Americans like to forget about their earlier imperialistic ventures - against the Native Americans, against other nations in the Americas, the bloody occupation of the Philippines, and so on. Were I forced to give a date for the foundation of the American Empire (which most definitely does exist) I would say the declaration of the Monroe Doctrine. That was well over a century ago.

US is not really an empire, although it achieved hegemony in 1989, its decline began in the 1960's.

Ooooo....such big words! If we had an empire, like Britain did, perhaps it would be a question. Since we do not, the question is moot. Really, what colonies does the US have?
