i am 17 and am joining the marine corps as a reservist, so i can still attend college. my MOS is set to be 2311 ammunition technician but it is not really what i want to do. i kind of got stuck with it because i had to pick a station closed to where im going to school i think. what i really want to do is marine recon or force recon. and what is the difference between the two? does force just mean you are parachute and scuba qualified so you get special missions? i saw somewhere that you can try out for force recon reguardless of what your MOS is. how would i do this. and what is my best chances of getting into recon or force recon? i was told i can do a lateral move later on, but realistically how hard is this? i got a 92 on the asvab when i went to take it at meps, and did above average today when we ran the ist for command at the recruiting station. after i get out of college in 4 years i plan on doing active duty. my contract is set for 8 years, 6 active and 2 inactive reserve. i appreciate any advice you can give thank you.

So let me get this straight...you don't know what they (Recon) do, but you want to be one???

How did you get a 92???

Just worry about boot camp, then SOI, then MOS school. You will have the next 5 years to learn about the Corps and its opportunities/functionalities. By that time, you may be so fed up with the Marines you'll be looking forward to getting out.

Seeing as how you don't know what Force Recon does, and you want to be part of it, it is safe to say this is just a phase you are going through of wanting to be cool. It's okay, it happens to everyone. What you need to do is research all branches/MOS's and find out which one works for you, and will offer you what you want- not just an opportunity to look cool.

Just curious...why do you want to be a Force Recon Marine? If you answer is "because they are bad-***" or some variation of that (as I suspect it is), you are trying out for the wrong reasons and will more than likely fail.

With a 92 on the ASVAB, you are pretty much qualified to do whatever you want.

You REALLY need to talk to your recruiter. Apparently he / she is not doing their job. You can not be in Force Recon (the same as Marine Recon) unless you are active duty. Start there. Yes you can try out for Recon regardless of your MOS, but a combat MOS will give you a leg up on knowledge, physical fitness, and experience.

Listen to cris100 his definitely right. By the way a high asvab score doesn't mean your going to make a good operator, becoming a recon operator ( force or bn) is not based on your asvab score. There's more to it you have to be both physically strong and more importantly mentally strong enough to push your body to the limits. Is a hard career to follow but in my experience very rewarding, with that said is not for everyone and if you dought yourself for one second you won't make it.

Also doing RnS (reconnaissance and surveillance) missions are not as cool as you think, your basically setting on a hide site (hiding position) for days at a time burning in the sun trying not to fall sleep, counting camels to past the time.

it extremely is interior the call. branch Recon comments to the branch Commander and could furnish intelligence it is clever for tactical making plans. rigidity Recon comments to the rigidity Commander (the commander of the final Marine Air-floor activity rigidity) with intelligence gained via deep recon it is in many cases used to realize strategic objectives.
