We are trying to find out if he will be able to be sent home because his grandmother just died. Will it interfere with his maternity leave a few months down the road? And if he does get sent home, how long will his leave be?

Only if his grandmother raised him. Had the role of parent.

Have the Red Cross here take care of it. He can get a humanitarian leave and come home for the funeral. It of course will be charged as leave. Figure he will have to burn up at least five days due to the distance involved.

As far as maternity leave, that is not guaranteed. Lots of guys have kids and they do not send them home for a normal event. He can request leave for the time you are having the kid but do not expect you to be able to call and say "I am in labor" and they send him home. You have to plan ahead for that and get the leave approved.

FYI I shipped out for Desert Storm two days after the birth of my first kid. I got no special consideration for it and I doubt the policy has changed much.

Probably not, grand parents are not "immediate" family, that would be parents and siblings only. Unless his parents died when he was younger and was raise by his Grandmother, then they will send him home.

It pays for you to be familiar with military rules and regulations.

it wil only qualify for emergency leave if Grandma raised him. otherwise it is strictly up to the command if they can spare him. if he comes home now it is very possibll he will NOT be allowed to come home later

Emeregncy leave is usually no more than 10 days

It is iffy. Some units will allow it, others go by the "immediate family only" requirement.... in any case get a red cross message put out for her, and he can go to his unit with that and see if they won't help him out.
