this is the guy that is your FACE at the new place you are going to.........he will be the guy that knows when you roughly will be arriving will help smooth things for you when you get there etc etc.

He will be the guy that drives you around the base and tells you this the chow hall, this is the laundry etc etc etc.......sort of the welcome wagon for you and that base.

Some of them take it seriously others could not give a flip either way.

So keep it friendly when you reply BUT be aware this guy is usually a rank or two above you and he is NOT going to be your drinking buddy, he is just going to be there for the first day or so once you arrive.

If you are married and bringing family etc along then let him know again he could be a wealth of information for you both.

edit also ENSURE that you get a phone number for him at some point, if you are taking leave beween school and getting to the command THINGS can go wrong and you need to keep him informed and he will guide you should you need help like that.

Your sponsor is an AD person who is your contact at the command. If you are flying in they will make arrangements to pick you up at the airport, escort you to barracks, sign you in, show you around, give you information on the area, etc... They can actually be the person you are replacing.

Soap so you know it isn't what you say and the person isn't scamming you. Yes he is your sponsor and you are his dependent but the AD member has a sponsor as well. Your spouse would have had a sponsor at the command he reported to, happens every time you PCS. TMO/JPPSO is the office you go through to set up the move and has nothing to do with sponsor. You can also be getting command sponsorship if you are going overseas. That is where the command is taking responsibility for you. In this case his sponsor is taking responsibility for him/her reporting and getting the right information.

Most soldiers travel by themselves and have to contact the USO to find there base at the airport, a sponcor is suppose to sponcer you and help you out so you are not arriving to a new base blind.

If you are in the military and you are PCSing, then you will deal with TMO. The sponsor is the one who is in the military. For an example, my husband is a Marine and he is MY sponsor and I am HIS dependent. You may want to ask questions to your command because that sounds fishy like someone is trying to fish information out of you and scam you.
