Question:
As a civilian with no Intel experience, which jobs should I look for on USAJOBS at CENTCOM or SOCOM in Tampa?

Ideally I would like to be in Intel. I have a BS degree in Business Administration from the University of South Florida and want to contribute to our intelligence apparatus.

To get in to the intelligence field, what you need most of all is the right personality - I worked the intelligence fields for well over a decade, to this day I have no idea what aspects of my psychology were the 'right' ones.

Perhaps an equal second is a degree, it doesn't matter what field you major in, just having a degree shows that you are able to focus and work on problems either independently or as a team.

Perhaps a large percentage of workers at NSA had no prior experience in any intelligence field either, they came in off the street - all 30,000 of them.

What is important is that you pass positive vetting. These are background checks - they go out and ask your friends about you - ask their friends about you - your teachers, bosses, friends, family, the list is long. If the overall picture is of the same person, then you get a security clearance.

In my case I pretty much fell in to the position. I came in via the Navy - I applied to become an air traffic controller, all the jobs listed had a page or two devoted to a detailed explanation of what the job entailed, but there was one that stood out to me - all it said was 'high level security clearance is required for this job' I ran with it.

The psych asked why I wanted it, I told him straight up - I want to find out if UFO's exist, and smiled. I also said 'military secrets' who wouldn't want to work there!!!

I got the job. After a decade or so I left the military to work in defence as a civilian. By that time it was who I knew, not what I knew.

Don't give up, just be yourself and try. Watch the papers closely for when these agencies advertise positions. Apply.

I know this isn't going to be the answer you want, but you virtually have almost no chance.I'm not saying its 0%, but its close...

I am in Naval Intel right now, and it will be Army intel soon, and let me tell you... It is rough, even for soldiers to get in. Usually civillian companies hire prior military who already have clearances.

It is easier, and a lot cheaper for the companies as well to do it this way, rather than pay 50-75k for a security clearance of a civillian when there are 10,000 applicants who are former military that already have one.

My best friend had your similar problem. He had a double BS degree in Political Science and International Relations and was looking into the Pentagon... He didn't even get a call back. He joined the Navy and went intel, now he works somewhere else a little higher up.

You can also pay to get your own clearance, but that again... could be 50-75k... I can't afford that.

Maybe think about joining the military and going officer, that looks great on a resume, and you get your clearance.

Best of luck,

Narrow your search down to a specific type of intelligance. It is a broad feild. A Business Administration degree will probably not get you there. You have more dues to pay. Some degrees that could lead you there are Criminal Justice, Political Science, Economics, Computer Science, Information Technology, Remote Sensing (Geology), and any foreign studies degree.

Some possible ways in are - Apply to the FBI, State Department, National Security Agency or the Military. The miltary route would probably require an enlistment low pay at first but good experience. If you are the right stuff you could possibly move into the officer ranks, but then thats not very hands on.

The "company" is not an easy and glorious life. Gathering information is manotinous, boreing and only for the right personality. You have to be a "great American" and be of stout mind and heart. The interviewing process is grueling and the background checks are intensive and invasive. You will have no deep dark secrets.

I was in "communications" and left after four years. I went onto a more straightforward way to serve my country. That of grunt, leader of grunts. There I knew who the enemy was.

Good Luck

Thank you for wanting to serve your country. However, without previous Intelligence experience, or a degree in Political Sci, History, or a language (ideally an Arabic one given the current fight), your resume is a bit short. CIA/NSA probably won't want to seriously talk with you based on what you've related here.

Now, if you have a PoliSci/Language Minor that's a different story. Also you could start a Master's Program in said fields, that would definitely generate some interest.

If you REALLY want to do this, you should go into the military, as nearly all civ/contractor intel analyst positions are held by prior service military folks.

Join the Army as a 35B - Counterintelligence Agent. Let the Army pay for your training, security clearance send you through the Defense Language Institute (DLI) to learn Arabic, Chinese, Korean, or Russian. Complete your 3 year commitment and then look for civilian work. You will have formal training, a TS, a foreign language and a resume that competes with everyone else applying for intel positions.

Almost all DoD (CENTCOM, SOCOM, PACOM, and MACOM) intelligence personnel are either currently in the military or ex-military. Incidentally, most CIA, NSA, FBI, and DHS intel agents also follow this path.

My husband has been in the military for 19 years and worked for both CENTCOM and SOCOM at MacDill AFB in Tampa, FL for 3 years. 99% of the men he worked with were military. Working at MacDill is extremely hard for non-military personnel. I hate to tell you this, but civilians most likely will not get hired for an intelligience position because they involve highly classified information.

The best way to get any type of job on a base or post (besides being in the military) is word-of-mouth. Do you know anyone in the military or anyone who already works on the base? Also, have you applied for your security clearance yet? If not, do so. This is a very complex process and can take a long time. Without a security clearance, you cannot get a job on base.

You may be able to get a government contract supplying or delivering items on base. It is not intel but can be financially rewarding. Plus, once you get a job on base, even if it is a temporary position, it puts you ahead of the game if a new position should open up.

Good luck to you!

You can apply for any job/ position. In my opinion most civilians that I have seen hired to work in military positions have been "on the job trained". So even though you have a BS in Business Admin you may very well get a job in Intell.

Another way is to work you self into the system. Start at a postion that would use your degree then transfer into the intel side of the house after you get to know people.

Good Luck

If you want to get into Intel, go to the USAJOBS website and apply as a intern or as a student. That is how it is done in the government. I used to work Human Resources Assistant for several years. This experience will give someone like you a great start in Intel and Law Enforcement. It is eye-opening and it will either make you have a new respect for the US Constitution or you will hate it. Good luck with your career!

SOCOM is Special Operations Command not Southern Command.

I wouldn't count on walking in off the street and working for the only two combatant commands that are acutally engaged in a war right now. You will be competing against people coming from the military that are already well versed in intelligence. If you really want to work in intel move to D.C. and try to get a job with DIA. After a while you could then probably make the move fairly easily.

You're wasting your time. USF isn't exactly an academic powerhouse, and your major won't help either. To get into intelligence, you want to have done very well at a top-notch university in Economics, Law, Global Studies or some such applicable field. The alternate path is through the military. Time to sign up!

But if I were you, I wouldn't try. You'll be sorry!

This is the lucky question that got stuck at the top of the home page of Y!A for over 13 hours.

As to my answer for this question, I would suggest something like an Account Manager for a company supplying Intel equipment to the Department of Homeland Security.

Hope this helps.

You could start out by doing a search by agency, in your case Department of Army. List State desired as Florida and specifically identify Tampa. See what comes up. I must caution, you may not qualify for much of the positions if you are not a veteran or military spouse. You may get lucky and they will have openings for "All US Citizens". It isn't hopeless, but it will be difficult. Additionally, since your degress is in Business Admin and you find a job you're eligible to apply, you would do best to apply with the goal of possibly switching job series. Good luck...

Many of the answers you have received thus far include good information. However, most of them are somewhat out there and off the wall.

If everything else in you life's background is correct, then I suggest that determine if the military will administer the Army Language Aptitude Test to you; or a civilian equivalent.

In the Intel business today, language is your number One asset. If you possess the mind for languages, most Intel organizations will hire you and send you to school.

Good luck. Oh yes, can you type? In the intelligence business you have to reduce all your activity of paper.

My Father, My Uncle, Myself, two guys named "Joe" and "Bill" and a woman named "V" have measurably changed the course of history on this planet. We all speak foreign languages natively due to pre-school age exposure to our primary foreign language. We all have at least one master's degree, three of us with engineering. Three of us also hold high school level track and field records... At 12 years old I beat about 200 experienced shooters including active duty military to win my first rifle shooting contest. My Uncle was NCAA rifle shooting champion for the whole United States.

We are all proactive not passive-responsive. So why are you wasting your time pondering this ??? YOU have t o really want to do this and being here asking the questions shows me you are on the fence, undecided. Lastly I would tell you that strife and hardship build character, solidarity of purpose.

I have had my thumb caught in the firing pin of a live 1000 lb bomb, I have cut my partner down at the knees to keep him from being killed by a white phosphorus grenade. I have left an airplane that was shot down with a parachute in my hand but not on my back and made it and avoided the ground search that followed.

Not trying to burst your bubble, but was stationed at MacDill for several year's and very familiar with CentCom, SoCom, NavCent, and about every other command you can think of down there.

To work as as Intel you have to have a TS/SCI clearance. Usually with a Poly. To get a TS/SCI clearance you first have to have a TS clearance. Before you can get a TS clearance you have to have a Secret clearance. Before you can get a Secret clearance you have to get a confidential clearance.

As a civilian you will not get a TS/SCI clearance any time soon. It takes years and years of background investigations to to get to that level. These jobs are usually filled by current military active duty who are retiring or leaving and already have a current TS/SCI clearance.

Honestly, it cost's 100's of thousands of dollars to get these clearances that SoCom/CentCom/NavCent require. Especailly with no prior experience in the job. Which are done usually over long periods of time for active duty military members in positions where they need the clearances. Starting with Confidential, and then working up to TS/SCI. Since you have no government clearances, and only a BS degree, you'll probably not get hired at CentCom, SOCOM, NAVCENT, or any other command dealing with intelligence. Unless its an administrative position with no security clearances required. And those positions are usually glorified secretarial positions.

Sorry - thats just the way it works. If you want to work Intel - Join the military and get the proper clearances. Contractors wont hire you and then pay 100's of thousands of dollars and sit around waiting 4-5 years getting your clearances approved when they can hire a retiring military member who already hold's all the clearances and can start immediately.

You might think about working for the CIA. In addition to the analytical work, there is a need for admin personnel.

With no prior exp, you're first step is to get in the door and start making contacts. The work, of course, should take priority over career building, but managed properly, both can be done at the same time.

I take it you want to remain in FL, might be tough, but you could eventually get a station there.

1. Are you a U.S. Citizen? (required for US intel)

2. Are you an older person with some work expereience?

(recent grads have internships but you didn't go to MIT or Georgetown)

3. Have you used illegal drugs in the past 10 years including "pot"? (Some require one year others 10- depends on agency)

4. Do you have technical skills, IT, database, webpage building, signals experience? (No skills, no job)

5. Have you ever lived internationally? (Helpful...if you can't think of why don't consider intel-things to consider: language skills, WHO or WHAT you interacted with abroad, Why'd you go?)

6. Have you ever done any of questionable moral chracter in your life? (Poor integrity makes you a risk- out of 10,000 applicants a day do you think they care about you? Things included are having too many sexual partners, alcoholism, gambling problems, a temper, etc.)

7. Do you suffer from an physical or emotional disability? (Immediate disqualification unless because of your disability you can perform your duties exceptionally well.(e.g., in a wheelchair but type 150 wpm, blind but have super sonic hearing)

8. Do you have at least three people who can "TALK YOU UP?" (Networkings not just for the private sector)

9. Do you have good credit? Have you paid all your debts? (If your in default of loans you're disqualified because your a risk- they don't want someone who would consider selling secrets for cash) Debt shouldn't exceed $5,000.00

I would do a little research and apply for many positions, even ones you "think" you're not qualified for. A lot of the government contractor companies, (AECOM, etc.) will require you to get a security clearance, but depending on the position you're applying for, and if they want to hire you, they will apply for your clearance during your hiring process. I know this for a fact because my sister worked as a civilian for AECOM. They also paid for her to get certifications (they paid her regular 40hr/week salary, plus paid for the courses, and the hotel, rental car, and per diem). And to top it off, my sister started off as a help desk worker with no degree, and she is now a senior programmer with certifications out the "you know what"!

You already have a degree, so just don't limit yourself to just one option. You NEVER know where your job hunting might lead you! Apply, apply, apply!!!

Good Luck!!

You could go for office program become a intel officer. That good cause you get lots of experience and when you leave after like 6 years, you will able to find very high pay salary job in civiilian sector, if you go to civlilian market with just BA and no experience, you will not get intel job cause you first need clearance, not likely you get getting with no experience, cost company a lot of money to do it, if you go for military, you can easily get top secret if you going for intel.

Hi. I think you would be perfect in one of the following professions:

1. Professional Interrogator. You get to extract important information from young people by applying electric shocks, twisting their arms till it breaks, threatening their families, etc.

2. Linguist. You'll need to know Spanish, Arabic, or Farsi. Otherwise what good are you? I suppose you can manage since you have so much B.S.

3. Mapping Analyst. They really need people who can read and analyze satellite and recon photos. You'll get to locate all the houses, schools, churches, mosques so that the Air Force can lay in a few thousand pounds of HE or WP.

Either way, you'll have so much fun killing, torturing, and maiming thousands of people across the globe. And all without leaving the comfort of your desk at MacDill AFB!

Just be sure to wash the blood stains from your soul, I mean shirt.

I am not familiar with CENTCOM or SOCOM, but various Federal Government agencies such as U.S. Dept. of State, FBI, CIA, DOD, DEA etc. will train you for such positions once you are hired. It takes about 6 months from application time to hiring time. They do extensive background checks.

Good Luck.

In this case it will depend greatly on other experience you have. There is not enough information in your question to help guide you significantly. A B.S. Degree won't get you very far on its own, and in Business Administration usually won't even get you in the door. Preferred areas of study are along the lines of international affairs, American foreign policy, cultural studies, international business etc. They will also not even take an application from you unless you have lived overseas for at least a few years. They are looking for people with at least those credentials and prior experience in either the military or intelligence fields. They will also be looking for you to be fluent in a foreign language of use (i.e. Chinese, Russian, Arabic, German). You got to get at least those credentials taken care of because you'll be on in several tens of thousands of applications from all over the country. Your education might get you in the door in a menial manner initially, however, and then it will be up to you to work you way up.

There are ways to infiltrate the American intelligence agencies, and USAJOBS is not one of them.

Military experience is a plus, but it doesn't necessarily mean thats where you will be assigned. Your degree will help, but probably not that much. Learn 2 or more lanuages, and make sure during this time you do not leave the country and can provide clear evidence of where you have lived and worked for your entire life with no unexplainable gaps.

And don't expect it to happen. Intelligence jobs are hard to get. Your best shot is applying at www.cia.gov. They will ask you what position you want to apply for. Some positions are harder to fill than others. Be careful what you choose. And if you're lucky, they will call you.

And maybe after your fourth tour with the CIA, you may be able to move to another position. You must realize that your expectations are unrealistic. Just get your foot in the door first.

And to add, it matters very little what your degree is in.

A business degree in intel? Maybe you could start at an administrative entry level position and work your way up. That should start you out with a security clearance, although not that high. Just apply. If you don't try you'll never know. As long as you can pass the background check. They will investigate your past from age 16 on. I retired from the Air Force. I was in a job that is really hard to explain to civilians ( I had TS security clearance) and ended up getting a job as a Purchaser/Inventory Control Manager. No business or logistics training at all. Just in the right place at the right time.

SOCOM is extremely difficult process, first you must excel in the regular US Armed forces to get an invitation, or apply to try for SOCOM, only a small percentage of the very best , fit, and well disciplined soldiers ever make SOCOM.I am not trying to discourage you, you may very well be the among the small percentage who will make SOCOM.

Look at the contractor companies in the area and apply. If you know someone that has a job there - that would be a plus. As for what jobs to look for, only you can answer that. You may not get your dream job to start with, but you can always work your way up.

Most companies do prefer to hire someone that already has a clearance, but they will hire an uncleared person. The investigation cost a lot of money and depending on the level, it can take months to complete.

I used to do allot of copying of the websites. I would have to look it up for you. And I am only on my Computer M-F.

So, here's my Solution for you>> Immediately go to the HR Dept. in the Military!!! They would definately have this website on file and could tell you which positions in the Civilian field is open to you with decent pay! (it is catered to your skill set)

BECOME a fireman or ploceman.. first they pay over 300K yearly and you get free life insurance as long as you work for the government. Or maybe you can join the army or the marines.;)
George P
2008-04-18 21:04:06 UTC
If you want to be in intel, you need to qualify for a TS clearance. If you can't get one, then you won't ever get an itel job. The problem is, no company will hire you, pay the money to get you the clearance, and not want something in return. You would pretty much be in the company for a while for them to pay that kind of money for the background check.

Actually, do you hold any type of clearance? If not, you won't have a chance. You are better off going into the military for a few years and at least get a secret clearance. Then, you might get lucky for them to get you a TS.

Why don't you try the CIA website? They are looking for new talent, CIA.GOV, click on careers on left side of screen and you can get info on how to send in an e resume. If you do apply and are going through screening, it would behoove you to not mention it anyone, unless that is you wish to tank your chances.

CENTCOM is at MacDill Air Base outside Tampa. SOCOM (Southern Command) is in temporary quarters in Miami after decamping from Puerto Rico. Your BA won't do much good in the world of intelligence without some language studies along the way. Most people involved in code breaking were Math majors.

In either case, you are looking for positions in the J-2 (Intelligence Directorate) of those respective commands.

10. Any run ins with the law? (Depending on the time and extent of the offense, felonies no are no no's, and again 10,000 applicants- "But it happened because..."They don't care.

11. Do you know someone who currently works for gov't? (There's your foot in the door- even better if you have a relative)

12. Do you have something to fall back on in case you don't make the cut? (Since they prefer millitary backgrounds because they already have their clearance,(your clearance is a very long process depending on the type and how much background they'll cover usually a year or more), there are thousands of others applying, you've seen something above that may be a concern; then have a contingency plan. If you applied once- don't bother reapplying because again, they don't care!

Good Luck!

Well it is interesting that you would say you want to join the Military Intelligence rather than the Civilian.

Why? And why wouldn't you join the Military and go into Intelligence? Why look for Civilian jobs at that particular base?

My Spider senses are tingling... hmmm

Not your average question for someone seeking a job in the Intelligence community.

Breaking into the field as a civilian isn't easy. You would do well to look at administrative or support positions that can lead to the real intel work.
