It is like being a soldier who uses his leave time to do missions and build up more cash than they will likely ever see in the civilian world at the risk of becoming a man without a country. Not all mercenary ops include actual combat operations, however all include the same negative results if caught.

You almost never know who it is you are working for which is why you choose very carefully who you work with. If you are working for a government that fact will be completely hidden under the name of a seemingly insignificant corporate header. (A front company)

If your mission is specific, your equipment will be provided for. If it is an open contract type of situation such as a bounty, you're on your own and must provide your own equipment. Mercenaries do not use tents. If you can't stay in a hotel, the nearest swamp will do.

Pay: Depends on the mission or the target. I knew guys that came back with anywhere from 5 to 50k for a weeks leave time. It just depends. Are you working as a load master dropping door bundles over a secluded jungle or are you hunting individuals, or maybe disrupting communications, sabotaging piplines, etc.

4- Who? Could be anyone, a government, corporation, agency, or even a deep pocketed individual. You'd never know which is why very few who can do missions do.

5 - Yes, terrorists use mercenaries, but more often terrorists are mercenaries. Everyone has their bad seeds.

P.S. Those telling you that mercenaries work for private security companies have no clue what they are talking about. Those people are security contractors and they are now completely under the control and authority of the United States Congress. A Mercenary is not and the United States Government or the US Military will not even acknowledge your existence if caught.

Most of the negative view on PMCs/PSCs are typical libtard views.

1. No, they are not issued weapons. They are privately owned or bought in country.

2. Depends on the company you work for and what you do.

3. Depends on the company and the job. Some can make up to $150,000/year

4. Using the term "mercenary" is ridiculous. Numerous countries have hired PMCs/PSC. DoD hire them, individual companies hire them, individual people hire them. Who do you think does the PSD for the politicians that go over to Afghanistan?

5. Do terrorists use mercenaries... they can. Hezbollah does it all the time

Mercenaries are not like you might think, nowadays (at least in relation to the US) they are called Private Military Companies. They do jobs that are generally important but not directly combat related, sort of like hiring extra people for the holidays to keep up the labor flow.

1 Their weapons are generally issued by the company, or privately owned by the contractor.

2. Their company handles those accommodations.

3. Better than regular troops.

4. The US has used PMC's pretty heavily in Iraq.

5. They can't afford them.

Why the heck are so many of these good answers yet getting multiple thumbs up?

Mercenaries are hired soldiers who fight for the highest bidder but ive never heard of them fighting against their own country. Most of them have some sort of backround in the military such as special forces, spec ops and other jobs of the "elite" nature.

1.They usually buy their own weapons and equipment.

2.They aren't in the field long enough to need tents and they pay for their own water and amunition.

3.The highest ive ever heard of a merc. getting paid is $200,000 a year but he was a former navy seal and had a lot of combat experience.

4.mercenaries are usually hired by rich people who need body guards such as politicians.mostly they have been hired by the U.S. to perform "black operations" that the U.S. doesnt want other countries to know they were behind.

5. Terrorists can't afford mercenaries andeven if they could i doubt a merc. would fight against their own country.

the correct term now adays is PSC(private security contractor) and what the first guy said is about right, except they don't actively engage the enemy their job is to protect stuff so they don't go looking for trouble, even though quite a few company's have don't some bad **** to people while trying to get the job done
