You don't just become an Air Marshal. It is a very high commissioned officer rank and must be earned.

ETA: When you said UK, I was thinking of the rank in the RAF (which is equivilent to that a of a Lieutenant General in the Army and the Royal Marines), and not a Law Enforcement Officer on a civilian aircraft

Contrary to other correct answers submitted regarding the rank of Air Marshal in the Royal Air Force, there is such a thing as Sky Marshals that operate on some UK flights.

They are rarely used on flights originating from the UK. On some flights, Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service Aviation Security Operational Command Unit (SO18) are used. The details of the operations of this unit are not made public and are not documented by media outlets.

This implies that you must join the Metropolitan Police Service as an Officer and then have several years of experience (including the use of firearms/counter-terrorism) to even be considered to join SO18.

Aside from this, there is no official route of employment, like in the US (Federal Air Marshal Service). UK law enforcement agencies very rarely use firearms routinely apart from actively responding to dangerous calls. This may explain the lack of armed protection of flights in the UK.

There are however an increasing amount of flight attendants being equipped with handcuffs and restraining devices, and even tasers on some US flights.

Hope this helps :)

Agree with some of you NO SUCH THING in the UK, stop believing media and read about bits and pieces on WIKI to start of with.

Future more your friend, if he was a Royal Marine then he was part of the Royal Navy nothing to do with the Army

Some really lame answers on this question. The question is how does one become a civilian airliner security agent for the British authorities. I don't even know if the British even have American style flying "air marshals".

Air Marshal is a senior rank in the RAF if you mean guards on airliners no

such thing in the UK. I would think he will do better without your help

There is no such thing in the UK - that is an American idea. In the UK an Air Marshal is a very senior rank in the RAF - not a security officer on a plane.

On the odd occasions where it might be felt necessary to have a security officer on a UK flight, it is the responsibility of the Metropolitan Police SO18 (Aviation Security Operational Command Unit) - so the route into that would be to join the police.

Only hysterical gun obsessed Americans have Air Marshals on their planes!

The UK doesn't have them or need them.
