Running in formation is done at double time. A normal march is 30 inch paces at 120 steps per minute. Double time is 180 paces per minute. That's just slightly more than 5 miles per hour. At that pace it takes about 35 minutes to travel 3 miles.

As you may already know they will do a test to see were you are at now and from there on out it will be a Plt run with the DI. So what ever pace the DI sets the Plt stays at that pace, most DI's are first class and can set a good pace. Running at least 18 minute three miles in pretty good. But on average I would say they will run it so you can run the three miles in at least 24 minutes unless they have changes the pass fall time required. That is the goal of the DI is to get you below the fall time. Once out into the FMF you can go faster depending on how well you train.

As fast as the soldier up front int he formation, sometimes they will put the fast runners up front to challenge you and see if anyone will straggle or fall out of formations. Sometimes the 1SGT or CO. will set the pace.
