WWII era is probably the .303 British Enfield MK II or higher.

Modern Day It is the L85A1 bullpup design, supposedly not popular with the troops until it's further modifications in late 1990's

Are you talking about the current issue bullpup assault rifle, or some rifle that has been used in the past? Bayonets have been around for hundreds of years, but the current rifle is the Enfield L85A2.
