Edward Almond was the leader of X corps and was second in command to MacArthur. The Marine General in charge on the ground was O.P. Smith. The North Korean leader was Kim Il Song and China was lead by Mao Tse Tung. Also the U.S. 8th army was routed, not the 1st Marine division, which while being stopped from making its continued Northward assault on the Yalu river, destroyed 5 Chinese divisions and wounded more. There were roughly 20,00 Marines at the Reservoir and they faced over 100,000 Chinese while fighting there way out of North Korea they soundly defeated them. The North Koreans were soundly defeated on all fronts after MacArthur's bold Landing of the 1st Marine division at Inchon. The landings broke the backs of the NK's and regained control of South Korea's capital Souel. This forced the NK's threatening the Pusan perimeter to retreat. After the Inchon landings the NK's were defeated and were pushed into North Korea. This is when the Chinese invaded and 2 years of static fighting around the 38th parallel followed. After Chinas invasion MacArthur was relieved by by Truman and replaced with Ridgeway.

The ad hoc division into two countries started the mess. It seems the Soviets sent troops in after WW II without much interest or thought, but simply because somebody had to do something with Japan no longer running the show. The US had made no plans at all, but rushed troops in when they saw the Soviets were doing so, and the 38th parallel was chosen as a dividing line by non-Koreans with about as much thought as you'd take to pick lunch from the menu. Once the two countries were invented, both Korean sides wanted reunification. And both the US and the USSR were worried that Rhee would invade the north to force it. So the Soviets built up the NKPA, and the US put together a paramilitary force in the South based on the model of the Philippine constabulary, with no armor, anti-tank, or heavy artillery components. Note that both the US and USSR thought of the South Korean leader as the major threat to peace. But the temptation from there was just too great for Kim.

US Army General Mathew Ridgeway was the Far East commander after Pres Truman relieved Gen Macarthur, Colonel Chesty Puller led a Marine regiment & went on to three stars. Lt General Walton Walker commanded a corps until killed on Christmas Day in an accident if I recall correctly. I might also add that then Master Sergeant Stan Adams won the MOH in Korea & later treated a boy named ChuckJ very well. RIP Lt Colonel Adams.
