There was a Baretta 501 sniper rifle made in 1985 and used by Italians. I doubt a US Marine would be referring to that gun.

First of all, the episode that Gibbs refers to the sniper rifle in question, isn't where Ari gets killed, it's originally in the episode where Kate gets killed. Secondly, speaking from my own experiences in the USMC, the West coast sniper school was at Camp Horno, on Camp Pendleton, and the rifle used was a modified Remington 700, with a wooden stock. Later, the stock was changed to a fiberglass stock because of swelling in the humidity of the jungles of the Far East. This rifle was to get the military designation, M-40. As modifications were made to it, different numbers were added/changed to it's military designation. The Bravo 51 was not used by the Marine Corp, at least not in my time, but we all knew this rifle as a Kate. While the Bravo 51 was a more accurate rifle, we made do with what we had (not tricked out M-14's), and any rifle is only as good as it's shooter's training, and aim! While other comments/answers say a lot of conflicting things, I can only speak for my individual experiences. Respectfully,
?
