Let me explain this the best I can. The Ranger tab is not required to join the Army Rangers. It's just something extra that you get for completing Ranger School. Ranger School is used to determine which Rangers would be good in leadership positions. You can't hold a leadership position in the 75th Ranger Regiment unless you have the Ranger tab. You don't just attend Ranger School right off the bat. You usually have to serve some time in the Regiment before you do. If you have a Ranger tab you would probably have a better chance at getting a shot at Special Forces as it shows that you're a bit above the average Ranger. That's probably why the guy in your other question told you to get the tab.

To be a Ranger you need to be

In the Army

Airborne certified

Eligible for secret level clearance

Score at least 50 on the ASVAB

You can get a shot at being a Ranger written into your contract. Ask your recruiter about it.

To actually become a Ranger you need to pass the 8 week selection process known as RASP (Ranger Assessment and Selection Process)

I believe you can get your Ranger tab as a Marine (if you complete Ranger School) but you will not be allowed to serve in the 75th Ranger Regiment while in the Marines. And Marines don't have SF, they have Marine Recon (similar, but different). And if I'm not mistaken the only way to get to Ranger School in the Marines is if you are training for Recon

Special Forces is one special operations Army group. Special operations is like SF, SEALs, PJs, etc.

You can get a Ranger tab (by going to Ranger school obviously, but you won't be a Ranger since to actually be one you have to be in the regiment thus in the Army) as a Marine but there aren't a lot of Marines that do... Most are going to be officers or Recon Marines. The Corps' special operations are MarSOC which includes Force Recon Marines.

If you want to do what your brother did, then join the Army and get your green beret (noting that you said special forces, not special ops) like he did.

If you want to be a Marine you won't need a Ranger tab to do that and you wouldn't want one.

The only Marine special force, by name, is the Maritime Special Purpose Force. If you are using special forces in a general sense, they go by different names in the Marine Corps like Recon and FAST.

Some Marines do attend Ranger School, but they are very few. And the Marines do not have Special Forces. They have their own Special Operations Marines, but it isn't the same. You sound like you want the title of US Marine, and who wouldn't, but you really want to be a Soldier. You might give some thought to what you really want. Good luck!

Edit: If you don't know, don't answer! This question was very clear. He asked about earning a Ranger Tab, not being a Ranger. He obviously knows the difference.

No. Rangers are soldiers in the US Army.

Another call of duty kid. You also want to train with the SEAls too? Maybe even join the SAS!
