How would I get out of the USAF Dep?

I made a big mistake by enlisting in the USAF. A real big mistake on my part. I've been to all the DEP meetings and me and my recruiter have a cool relationship. He never tried to sell into joining. I wanted to join myself, but now I wanted to get out because I want to be in the USN. What steps should be taken in order to follow through with this.

It's actually a lot more common than you may think,

Firsy you would first have to request a DEP discharge (Entry Level Separation).

from the branch you are enlisted in, and then apply to join the other service through the other service's recruiter



Talk to your recruiter it's easy to set up, if he gives you any grief cite DOD directive 1332.14:

E3.A1.1.2.1.5. Inter-Service transfer of inactive reserves in accordance with DoD Directive 1205.5



But this shouldn't be a problem as the air force is pretty stacked as it is.





NOTE: A DEP discharge has one, and only one negative effect: If you are discharged from the DEP, and later want to enlist in that SAME service, you will require a waiver.

The biggest mistake is listening to that Navy Recruiter. It really doesn't matter what recruiter you talk with, they will all sugar coat everything.



What surprises me is that you had to be SOLD in order to decide on the Navy. You are relying on someone telling you what to do and not what you really wanted to do in the first place.



Go ahead and tell your AF recruiter you want to get out of the AF Dep. Then join the Navy.



I hope you like boats! Do you like sharing your bunk with 2 other people? It's pretty hard to drive your car when your stationed on a ship. Makes it pretty hard to go out on a date or see your spouse when your out on a ship.



I think you need to talk with your AF recruiter and let them know the reasons for making the change. You'll probably find out that anything the Navy can give you, you can get with the AF.



And for "Yo Its Me" - he has a good point - do your stint in the AF. If you absolutely hate it, get out after 4 and join the Navy.

They will take Prior Service, the Air Force won't. So if you go into the Navy, you will never be able to get into the AF.

You havent given the oath of enlistment. Go talk to the Navy recruiter.

Are you in the Delayed Entry Program?



If so, then you can get out anytime you want. You aren't obligated to the USAF until you actually go to basic training. They will try to persuade you into staying and they might even tell you that you aren't allowed to get out but you are.

you contact your Recruiter NOW and tell him. then you have to convince a Navy recruiter that you won't pull the same stunt on HIM in a few months.

How about finishing your enlistment and then enlisting in the Navy? You will get retirement credit. I have buddies that have been in more than one branch.

what made you change your mind?Talk to a Navy recruiter.If you didn't do your final swearing in oath,then you might be able to switch branches.From what i've heard though,the Air Force has it pretty good.
