You have to join the regular Army first. Then, when you are established in the regular army, you will receive notification by email whenever the SAS are recruiting, inviting anyone within the army who is interested to apply (along with all sorts of other internal army recruitment opportunities). You would need the endorsement of your commanding officer to apply. I guess they would recruit about every year or so. Then you would be put through a rigorous series of tests and interviews to establish whether you are truly SAS material.

It's not listed on the DFR website because it's not a job you can apply for straight out of civilian life.

You need to be at least a fully qualified Private [Proficient], or the equivalent rank from the other branches. Anyone in the ADF can apply for and attempt SASR selection, though most successful applicants come from the regular Infantry.

Commandos draw few recruits straight off civilian street, and like the SAS most of their successful candidates are Infantrymen. SASR are the more long ranged recon-oriented specialists, Commandos are for the more overt and larger scale jobs. It takes 8 months to train a Commando, 18 months to train an SASR Trooper. Different jobs, not a stepping stone to each other.

Everyone assumes Army is the only way to join SASR.

HOWEVER

you can join the Airforce as an ADG (airfield defence guard)

you get more toys, better gear and better conditions. However I here the training is extreme and a lot of people pull out due to injuries. But what doesn't kill you makes you stronger right? and if you can survive ADG training you'll have a good chance at SASR.

Roles within the ADGs

ADG Rifleman

Riflemen form the basic building block of the Airfield Defence Guard section. In general, all ADG's are trained to operate as riflemen. In an ADG section there are usually four riflemen. The primary weapon of the rifleman is the F88 Austeyr or the F88 Austeyr with a grenade launcher.

ADG Gunner

Airfield Defence Guard sections may have up to two gunners. Their primary weapon is either a F89 Minimi or MAG 58 machine gun. All ADG's are trained to operate both weapons. These weapons provide the majority of firepower for an ADG section.

ADG Sniper

An Airfield Defence Guard sniper is a highly trained airman capable of undertaking specialist tasks, such as surveillance and reporting, maintaining a very high standard of fieldcraft and marksmanship skills.

ADG Assault Pioneer

Airfield Defence Guard Assault Pioneers are cross-trained in basic engineering skills, including the construction of field defences, obstacles and the operation of plant equipment.

ADG Signallers

Airfield Defence Guard sections have at least one signaller. A signaller provides communications to enable highly dynamic command and control.

ADG Close Personal Protection Operator

As an Airfield Defence Guard (ADG) you may have the opportunity to become qualified as a Close Personal Protection Operator (CPPOP). CPPOP's ensure the protection of aircrew

You can't just walk of the street into a SAS job. You have to put in years of service, show good conduct and character, the ability to both think for yourself and follow orders without question. You have to be both physically and mentally tough. You have to be able to lie believably, have no social life, and never talk about work.

Fed up with special services questions, just put in sas/sbs in search engine. But to answer your question chain an iron ball to your leg and swim there to enlist you will be well on your way
