All I could find was that it stands for Lead Petty Officer.

My boyfriend sent me an email saying that he was made an LPO.

He talked about how it is a very important job and given only to the best NCO's out there. He went on to talk about how you really have to be a dedicated sailor for such a prestigious job, and that many people respect you for such a thing. Later on in the email, he said that people who are LPO's usually become fairly successful in the Navy, and that very few people are ever afforded the chance. He is a Petty Officer Third Class which he says is really hard to get for most people.

I am so proud of him, but he never went into specifics about what he actually does.

I am ignorant to how the Navy works I'm sorry. My dad was army and as for me, I have nada. I'm just a girl going to school for nursing.

Thanks for your service btw for anyone in the military who answers this!

Don't listen to the guy above me. E-4 is not just a glorified Seaman. People who usually say that are not successful in the Navy. As stated before, being an LPO is very important. Although, there is a misunderstanding to this title. This is the order of precedence in a division from high to low: Division Officer (O-1 to O-3), Division Leading Chief Petty Officer (E-7 to E-9), Division Leading Petty Officer (E-5 to E-6), Work Center Supervisor (E-3 to E-5), Technicians/workers (E-1 to E4).

Normally, an LPO is (E-6) in charge of multiple work centers (Big commands). Smaller commands, the Division Officer is an E-7 to E-9, LPO is E-6 or E-5. It is possible for an E-4 to be the LPO, but that is for a command that is really small or due issues such as the previous LPO got in trouble and the only reliable person is an E-4.

Sometimes the LPO title is overused such as a work center supervisors would claim that title because he/she is in charge of that particular work center or the lead Petty Officer, thus can be called LPO. In my opinion, your boyfriend is a Work Center LPO, not the whole division, but if he is Bravo Zulu! You should be proud of him!

E-4 is not usually that hard to get, depends on the rate though. Some of the over-manned rates it can be very tough.

LPO is pretty much 3rd in line in a Division. There's a Div O (usually a low ranking officer) then the Chief, then LPO, below him is a Work Center Supervisor. So LPO is an important position and it's usually an E-6 or E-7 so if he earned that spot as an E-4 that's pretty good. Probably in a small division but still.

An LPO, is a Senior Petty Officer, they mainly help the Senior Officers with Administrative Tasks in the Navy,

Most LPOs do become successful, because they're chosen for demonstrating Great Leadership Abilities and being Intelligent and Trustworthy.

Its just one more step on the ladder to success

A Petty Officer Third Class is Pay Grade E4 and it is not that hard to make as long as you do your job and pass the written exam for advancement.

LPO is Leading Petty Officer. An E4 is rarely selected as an LPO.

LPO are normally at E6, But it depends on the Command.

A very small command could have an E4 as the LPO of that section.

It is just a leader ship position where he may be the supervisor of Two or Three junior personnel.

Yikes FC1... STG's also serve in the ASW Module on the carrier's also. I know I was an LPO and later Div O of an ASWMod. AND to the person who suggested avoiding Aviation: IF you do well in an A-School in the various aviation ratings you could select orders to an HSL Squadron... we cruised on Frigates, Destroyers, and Cruisers. And YES I understand HSL is being converted to Maritime Strike, Helicopter (HMS)

LPO is like being the foreman of your workshop.

It's unusual that he's an LPO as an E-4. Most are E-6 or E-7. Tell him you're proud of him.

USUALLY a LPO is an E-6 (1st Class Petty Officer); It just means that that person is responsible for getting the job done. It is an important job ! I put 21 years in Naval Aviation ! (Retired E-7 ) ! (CPO ). Chief Petty Officer !
