Question:
Not too enthusiastic about my future MOS in the NG?

I'm going to be a 42A Human Resources Specialist. Only reason why I picked that was because, since I'm joining the Guard, I want to be able to have training in an MOS that will give me some training for outside of the military. And knowing Human Resources is very civilian like work..

But when I was choosing which MOS I wanted with my Guidence counselor, I kind of had this realization that this is the Army; pick an exciting job! For once, Infantryman didn't sound so bad to me. Or any other combat related jobs. They sound exciting!

Again, though, i'm joining the National Guard. I can't really take Infantry training and use it outsie of the military. At least the specific job training.

My question is, should I really pick an MOS that has actual job training to help me with civilian jobs, such as Human Resources? Or do all jobs in the military give me a head start in at least getting hired. I'm only 18, i'm not picking my career, yet. I just want a job that can pay the bills and allow me to go to school.

The NG isn't going to be enough for you to pay your bills. You don't get much pay for one weekend a month and 2 weeks a year. You will get AD training for your time in BT and AIT.

Being in the guard unless you deploy you really won't do much of your MOS. 42A is pretty boring. Yes it is good for civilian skills on the outside however you still will be dealing with military paperwork and regulations etc.

I was special forces (18-E; SF communications) Aside from the communications part, there is no civilian counterpart for that job. But I can promise because of my experiences as an 18-E, I can get a job anywhere. It's no so much what you learn through training but how the training demonstrates what you are capable of withstanding. If you can manage the stresses of going infantry and going to work, when you go for your job interview (i.e. a job in HR) your interviewer will be certain through your military experience and training that you will be more than qualified for the job. So to answer your question, do what you want in the military, not what you think will look good.

Well truthfully, 42A is NOT going to get you a civilian job.

Companies want people with BS degrees in Human Resources, who also know all the laws pertaining to hirings, etc.

Thats something the Army doesn't get into.

To get a decoent job, you have to have a job skill

Just being in the Guard, is not gonna get you a decent job.

42A is a horrible job to pick. Seriously, they have no respect in the army and if you're in the guard, then I'm sorry if you become one. The only people who will respect you will be civilians who don't know better. 42A is a civilian job and in my oppinion should be handled by civilians, not soldiers. I don't consider 42A to be soldiers. Sorry if I offend anyone, but it's the truth.

Being a combat arms soldier, you will not only earn respect in the army but you will earn much more outside of it. If you can tell your boss, "I fought in afghanistan" then indeed you will find yourself with a good job.

Don't join the guard if you want to be in the combat arms, either. You go to basic like us active guys, but you go back home and train with crap for weapons and crap for pay. You'll probably geta huge bonus, but you'll only see parts of it every few years. It's not worth it.

Go active. Join the combat arms. And if you think you have what it takes, join the elite ranks of the Infantry. Go further than that, become a Ranger. Rise up and prove to yourself that you are something much greater than you ever thought before.

Get a job in intel. There are a ton of civilian equivalents and it sure beats working in the S1.

Also, like the other guy said, NG won't pay you enough unless you're activated.
