I am a former Marine and I know and have spoken with SEALs about this subject. Here s the skinny.

Anyone who wants it can be a Marine or a SEAL. Depends on the individuals ambition.

Marine Coprs basic training drop rate is over 40%. Yes Marine recruits do quit, refuse to train and are discharged. The average recruit is 19 years of age and their first time away from home.

SEAL drop rate is 80%. However these guys go back to the Fleet, because they have already begun their military careers. SEAL candidates are older, more mature. They need to be because of the classified work they do.

It was agreed during a Marine SEAL conversation that if you took a graduation platoon from either MCRD. With each Marine MOTIVATED to become a SEAL and sent that platoon to BUD/S. The drop rate would be single digits. HOWEVER, the maturity factor may not allow for an affective team.

Marines and SEALs have different missions and both are excellent at those missions.

BUT because I am a Marine, I will not resist the temptation to say.

A SEAL is a Warrior King, who was too much of a wussy after High School to be a Marine!

If you take a Navy Seal against a basic Marine Infantry, the Navy Seal has the upper hand because they have more specific training in Special Operations and what they do.

However, if you take a Marine Force Recon Sniper, they would be able to do SO many more things than Navy Seals.

Its not a matter of who is better than who. Each has a job they were designed to do.

I would look at it as a whole. Every Marine (no matter what their MOS) is a basic Infantrymen. You could take the cooks or supply folks and use them in an Infantry platoon if you had to without a blink of an eye. Would they be able to do as complicated tactics as group of 0311s? Hell no. But, they would do FAR FAR better than say the Air Force trying to do Rear Area Security!

We also have something in the Marine Corps called tradition. Our past is our future. Once a Marine - Always a Marine.

Stop the comparison and concentrate on making yourself better! There is always room for improvement (both mentally and physically)!

First off the marines are badass i have nothing against them. BUT seals go through longer and more intense training. They not only work on land but in air and sea, hence the name SEAL (Sea Air Land). The first part of training is 12 months then they go trough another 18 months after that before they go on a mission. If you look at the typical marine vs the typical seal....the seal is a lot bigger, alot more muscle, and they are ripped out of this world. Regular infantry marines are bad but the recon marines is where it is at if your in the marines. Why not go all the way. You said they are the best INFANTRY SOLDIER in the world....this is true BUT seals are not infantry soldiers they are special ops. Good Luck.

first off you cannot compare the two equally. the marines are well trained combat infantry soldiers overall (not evryone in the USMC is in the infantry), but the Navy seals is an ELITE team of men, who as you stated where mostly prior USMC vets. It is a notch up, much like the geen Berets over the US army infantry. Navy seals are some of the most ELITE type units in the world today. The seals are more well rounded than you may understand, they can survive, fight and thrive in all situations on land and sea. the Seals train more, train continually, it if more demanding on an indiviual than the USMC, which is very demanding in it's own right, but once again, the Seals are an ELITE team, and team meaning small band, highly trained. the USMC is a much larger fighting unit, different roles in combat, both very important.

Damn, I see this kind of question here like once every week.

The SEAL are a special operation force of the US Navy while the Marines is a separate branch of the Armed Force.

The training they go through are different. The average SEAL is probably better train then the average Marines, but they operation in small teams.

But the Marines are far bigger in numbers and more better equip.

If there was a scenario to destroy 20 Russian T-90 tanks. They small SEAL team will be screwed but the Marines, no problem, their AH-1Z Viper, AT weapon, M1 Abram tanks, M3 Bradley will rape them.

To say it in a way some people can understand, you're like comparing Ninja to Samurai.

In my opinion, a FORECON is better than a SEAL. FORECON do allot more training than SEAL, even the ones the SEAL consider unnecessary.

FORECON operate far behind line, even farther than SEAL would go. They do reconnaissance and specailize in more direct action. They are also supply to last for weeks out there.

They SEAL are just like, "go in there, kill him or bomb this and get out."

And My God, whats wrong with people saying Marines are under the Navy?

The Department of the Navy and it consist of the Navy AND the Marine Corps.

The Navy SEAL fall under the Navy, not the Department of the Navy while the Marines fall under the Department of the Navy. Theres a difference.

Department of the Navy ---> Navy ---> Navy SEAL

Department of the Navy ---> Marine Corps ---> FORECON

Damn do I have to draw a damn chart for some people?

That's not even a fair comparison. The Marines can take the average person off of civilian street and mold him or her into an effective combat infantry soldier. The Navy S.E.A.L.s have an 80-85% drop-out rate due to physical, emotional, and mental stress. However, for marksmanship, marine snipers have the reputation of being the best world.

There is no comparison..... To compare Marine Infantry to SEALS is like comparing a high school football team to the Green Bay Packers....

Not denigrating the Marine Infantry...... they are a fine organization but they are NOT the "best elite infantry soldiers in the world"..... not even second

Navy Seals as specific training special operation. US Marines are a branch of military services like the Navy Army and the Air Force.

ok neither one of them are soldiers, the Navy SEALS are sailors, the Marines are Marines

you cannot compare the SEALs with Marines, the average SEAL is much more qualified then the average Marine, the more accurate comparison would be the Marine corps infantry compared to Army infantry, you would compare Marine Recon with Navy SEALs, and i would say they are trained for different missions, SEALS six is the best of the best right there with fabled "delta force"

ARE you on Crack your comparing one of the worlds best Special Operations to a ******* Marine Grunt. If your gonna do these bullshit comparison compare Marine Infantry to Army Infantry, Rangers to Recon, and Army Special Forces to Navy Seals, and Delta to DEVGRU. Take Pride in whatever service you join dont make comparisons we are all on the same side.

SEAL boys do Special Operation jobs for the NAVY. This job is not done by the Marines. Marines have lots of other things to do.

SEALS have far more specific training. Marines are nothing compared to them. But many seals were also marines before they became seals

The Marines are a Department of the Navy. Which means they are under the Navy. The SEALs are the best in the Navy. SEa Air Land.

In a hand to hand fight, I would go with the Redtab Marine. But, in the middle of the night, a four man SEAL team could easily slaughter an entire platoon of Marines without even raising alarm.

Well one’s a specialist unit while the other is a branch of the military…hmmm…of course the Marines would win…there’s many, many thousands more of them.

None are, in and of themselves, better than the other. They both have their purposes for existing.

The Marines are simply awesome. You can’t fairly compare them to any of the Special Forces.

the seal hands down, they are elite. im not sayin becoming a marine is easy but becoming a seal is tougher, as it should be. i doubt a force recon sniper would be any match for a seal, force recon is mroe on par with rangers than with seals, which are more on par with special forces

Marines, since less than 3% of people around the world can call themselves that.
