Im not American, so understand my lack of knowledge for the forces over there, but i do have a general knowledge...Anyway, ive always thought the US Marines were the standard Infantry soldiers of the US Army. Like the Marine corps where a general name for the foot soldiers. But ive just found out that they are actually apart of the Navy! Ive always wondered why they were "Marines"! So im now wondering what the basic Army for Soldiers that fight in Iraq and modern places are called. Like all the helmet cam footage of firefights from soldiers wearing ACU, i always thought they were Army Infantry- Marines? And also what are the marines? Do they look similar?
Thanks!

The U.S. Army is the primary land fighting force of the U.S. It numbers well over a million strong and wins war by overwhelming force. All members are soldiers.

The U.S. Marine Corps numbers around a quarter million, it is a subdivision of the Department of the Navy and they specialize in sea to ground attack. As a practical matter though, they now do the same stuff as the Army leading to some calls for their replacement. All me,bears are Marines.

Both services have "foot soldier" infantry that are now pretty much exactly the same thing day to day.

The Marines are under the department of the navy. They specialize in amphibious operations such as invading by sea. when they we first formed years ago they boarded enemy ships and fought off borders. They got the name leather neck because they used to have leather collars to protect their necks from cutlass swipes. Those days are over so Marine division will often times be stationed on navy ships in case they are needed.

Also Marine divisions are associated with Marine air wings that consist of fighter jets, and helicopters to provide close air support and transportation.

The Army on the other hand does not do amphibious assaults and their air units are limited to helicopters.

They depend on air force fighter jets and bombers for support and transport planes for a ride.

In an invasion where the enemy can not be easily reached on land and it has come time to send in ground forces- the Marines will attack from sea while Army air borne will attack from the air.

Then once there is a foot hold they will build bases and bring in the army's heavy gear.

The Army is the primary ground combat branch of the Armed Forces.

Marine Corps is a Naval Infantry Force run by the department of the Navy (But Marines are not sailors).

Let's not get it twisted folks. The Marine Corps is not part of the Navy. It is a completely separate branch of service. We may work together on many occasions, but we are not subordinate to the Navy. That is like saying the Coast Guard is part of the Navy. The CNO does not tell the CMC what to do. The Department of the Navy is simply the civilian oversight for both the Navy and Marines.

The U.S. Marines are part of the U.S. Navy. they have nothing to do with the ARMY.

When the U.S. Navy was established there was a need for a fighting force on board ship to help defend the ship in close combat and to storm other ships when they came alongside. These were the days of Sail in the year 1775.

Later the Marines were used to storm enemy shores from their ships at sea.

The Marines seize territory, the Army controls it.

The Marines are so full of their own importance, while the Army just gets the job done.

The Marines come in and take credit for all the work the Army has done and claim they are always the first in that's all you need to know.
