My boyfriend is at boot camp now in San Diego. He told me that if he is in the top of his class when he gets into special training (in Pensacola) that he'll get to pick the base he'd be stationed at. Is this true? and what kind of places can aviators be stationed at? does anyone know where he might be stationed after special training? Thank you!

ok, here's the deal. Yes, we do KIND OF get to pick where we get stationed. but its all pretty much based on the needs of the Marine Corps. he might get to pick west coast and they will pick what base he goes to. With Aviation, there is several places he could go... mainly.... cherry point north carolina, Miramar California, camp Pendelton cali or Oceania Virginia

NAS Pensacola has schools for avionics and aviation mechanics. I think the crew chief school is there. There are probably other aviation schools there.

It would not be surprising if they let him choose his duty station. They like to reward marines who do well.

The major bases for aviation:

Cherry Point, NC - fixed wing including some fighters, C-130

New River, NC - helicopters

Beaufort, SC - fighter town

Quantico, VA - helicopters

Miramar, CA

Pendleton, CA

29 Palms, CA

Yuma, AZ

Hawaii

Okinawa - helicopters and C-130

Iwukuni, Japan - fighters

There are a few other places with small detachments of aviation like GA and Tx. A few active duty marines are stationed at Reserve units at places like Great Lakes, IL or around the country.

Yea for the most part you don't really get to chose your duty station after your MOS School/s. I went from Parris Island to MCT at Camp Geiger, then to Millington TN to the Naval Station there to complete the first of my two schools as an Aviation Ordnance-man. After that it was off to Sunny Orange County California to MCAS El Toro with a return trip to my Duty Station at MCAS Beaufort. I didn't spend a lot of time at MCAS Beaufort between getting sent to Twenty-Nine Palms for a CAX (2 months), and additional schools at Cherry Point (Technical Publications Librarian School), Naval Station Mayport Flordia (Ship board aircraft fire fighting school), and misc deployments like aboard the USS Enterprise (3 months of workups and a 6 month deployment), so even if he does get a prime duty station that's no guarantee he'll get to enjoy it :P

is he an officer? pensacola is the training center for naval pilots. And i do not believe he will have the pick of where he goes straight out of bootcamp. Generally marines go to MCT or another training center for another two months after bootcamp.

If he is enlisted and has an aviation oriented job yes he will go to NATTC Pensacola which is the job training side of NAS pensacola.
