First, I want to say the Coast Guard is the most under recognized of our forces. They fought in WWII and they were there with us in Vietnam. They may have served in the Gulf. During the Vietnam era, the coasties may have been among the best trained. A large percentage of them went to SERE (survival, evasion, resistance, and escape) school. Many of them attended the Marine Corps Sere school.
No, the Marines do not get more recognition than it deserves. It gets less recognition than it deserves. They have consistently gone into combat with smaller numbers and lesser equipment and excelled at their job.
The marines probably receive a larger share of the recognition that they deserve because of the attitude of marines. If you drive down the road you will see more Marine Corps stickers on cars than any branch, even though they are the smallest branch. Anyone who is a marine knows why. A marine is more likely to tell you he was a marine than someone who served in another branch.
Marines accept anyone who served. We recognize that many never leave the states. We recognize others as being a marine because he became a marine, not because he served in combat.
I would say the Marines get the most recognition and probably deserve the most recognition. The other branches aren't getting the recognition they deserve. I would suggest they teach history in boot camp as the Marines do. They need to honor their heroes and develop the pride the Marines have. Then they can provide the recognition they deserve.
Awww, David, you know the marines love the squids. We wouldn't go anywhere without you! ;)
