You can join when you're 17 with parental consent. When you're 18 you get to take that big step by yourself.

It can take anywhere from several weeks to several months to ship depending on schedule availability.

Edit: To the guy below me, Marine Boot camp is NOT 6 weeks long.

You have to wait until you are 18 unless you get clearance from your parents. boot-camp is 6 weeks of HELL!

Personally, I wouldn't. you are still young and need time to grow into the person you are. I was going to join the army right after high school but decided to wait a year or so. By the time the year came, I was a different person and decided against it. I cant amagine the person I might have been if i hadn't of waited.

If you are you asking this question "should i join" dont join because it is not the decision that comes from you. you should decide if its the right thing for you, Make sure you know what your getting in to. Many people asked "should i join" questions and they end up not joining or become very miserable while in the service.

if you need to go to college and/or you don't have a lot of money (or support) from relatives for food and housing? then yes
