different A schools work different in regards to the orders. At most navy schools you will fill out a dream sheet listing the commands you would prefer usually divided by sea duty and shore duty and overseas duty. The detailer for your rating will send you to where ever there are billets open for your paygrade. Other schools have a preset liss of unassigned orders for each class and each Sailor's gradepoint average determines where they are in the line to pick orders. After your first duty station you have a lot more control over where you get stationed, but it is always the needs of the navy first.

Dpanic pretty much hit the nail on the head with a 40lb hammer.

During my A school, orders were so backed up that we only got to put on our dream sheet the top 3 C School choices we wanted. No ship pref/coast pref.

I know in GM A School they had a list of open billets and the instructor would have them pick by highest GPA in the class.

It all depends on your school, do well and you increase your chances of getting what you want. Just remember it is called a dream sheet for a reason. You'll learn the needs of the Navy come before what you want.

Nothing is ever guaranteed until you have it. If you get to your school and someone tells you that you can pick your ship. Don't get too excited until you have your hard copy orders with that ship's name on it haha. Plenty of times I've been told something, got my hopes up, then crushed the next week lol.

you will choose your assignment based on class ranking.. if the ship you wish to be stationed aboard has need of your rate, it will be on the list. the better you do, the better your odds that the choice you want will be available to you.

When you ask, first they are going to laugh, then they are going to keel-haul you for asking.
