My husband is looking into the air force. We both know that any military job is demanding and will take a lot of time away from family. And we also know that he will more than likely be deployed no matter the job. My question is, which job deploys less often? He is willing and wants to serve our country! BUT would like to be home as much as possible.

Hello Emily and Emily's husband.

First off I want all people who are thinking about the Air Force to stop thinking about DEPLOYMENT.

Since the Middle East engagements beginning in 1991 this word: "Deployment" has served to scare people into thinking that everyone is going to be "deployed."

In order to help the Army out, the Air Force restructured its philosophy into an AEF - Air Expeditionary Force. This allowed the AF to send "selected" individuals into the combat zone to assume duties to relieve the Army so that combat soldiers and Marines could fight.

Now, currently, it was announced that the Air Force would select people (not entire base units - or there would be no one left to operate AF bases if "EVERYBODY" deployed!!!!) to the combat zone for a period of 6 months. Then, depending on how critical there job was they would not be sent back until 18 - 24 months at home base expired.

Now, saying that, there will be LESS AF deployments now that we have pulled back out of Iraq. And, if the President disengages in Afghanistan there will be little need for the Air Force to deploy.

Now, the Army and Marines deploy entire units overseas. The Air Force can not afford to do that. We don't have UNITS at any base that are like Army/Marine combat units that can be sent overseas. Everybody at an AF base is needed at their job to keep that base - stateside or overseas - operational. Even when AF people do deploy their work at the home base must be done by their co-workers. There are NO new replacements for AF people who deploy.

So, stop worrying about it.

Now, no one can actually tell you which Air Force jobs are subject to deployment.

First off; your husband will be at basic training for 9 1/2 weeks before attending his technical school. Depending on his job - his technical school can be from 1 month to 12 months. Then, he is only an apprentice and not qualified on his job to BE deployed. He has to enter upgrade training at his first base and this usually takes about 10 months - 18 months to complete. By that time, he will have over 2 years in the Air Force on a 4 year enlistment.

Might he deploy? Maybe. It depends on the world threat situation. It depends on if we are still engaged in fighting in the Middle East.

If your husband volunteers for England, Germany, Italy, Turkey, Okinawa, Japan, Hawaii, Alaska for a family - accompanied tour (36 months) then his chances of deploying are minimal.

Know this: being send to an AF base overseas on a long family accompanied tour is NOT a Deployment. It is a Permanent Change of Station (PCS) and an overseas tour. Deployments are short periods of duty in the combat zone.

One can not give a list becasue we never know what the mission will require and what jobs are needed at that mission.

Your husband won't spend a "lot of time away from family." His time away while in basic training and technical school will be more anxious for you than if he ever deploys later on. Make sure you remain where you are living or go home to mommy/daddy to live while your husband is in basic training and technical school. You have to WAIT to join him until he finishes his schooling and gets assigned to his first AF base - stateside.

Do not base his enlistment into the Air Force upon any "deployment."

If he goes - he goes. If he doesn't - he doesn't.

Best wishes,

Being in the military your going to deploy one day. Regardless of the job. The AF is the least branch of all to deploy but you still will deploy. There are people who have been in for 20+ years that just got tasked to deploy for the first time. Then there are people who have been in for 8 yrs that deployed 3xs already. It doesnt depend on the job because you can deploy not in your field. You can get tasked to deploy doing something like escorting contractors who fix things on base. That will be your job for 6months. I have a huge flight and deployments are not even by the least. Some people haven't deployed while others are on their 3rd. You can get out of a deployment by having health issues or getting pregnate. But you signed up for the military so why would you expect all the benifits and not hold up your end. Your going to sign up to protect and defend our nation. It's a high cost but it is worth it trust me. You will have time for school when you are doing your regular job and you can even do school online when your deployed. Just one class though I believe. You are going to have so many benifits from the military being apart of something that defends your family and other families. There are many jobs to choose from but overseas there is a place for each job. So picking a job that doesn't deploy often is hard. I know for a fact that security forces (cops) deploy often. Very often and they burn out fast. My advice would be to talk to your recruiter and make the best choice for yourself. I know tons of people who let their recruiter take advantage of them and choose a job they didn't want. This is your choice, your life. Be smart and good luck.

If he's willing and wants to serve our lovely country then you just have to accept that he will get deployed... If he or you want him home as much as possible then the US Air Force is not the fit for him because I think every job in the Air Force will be deplloyed at least once or twice. Try National Guard or Army National Guard

Anything in the Reserves is least likely, if at all, to get deployed. Weekend Warrior pretty much.

Don't even bother joining the military if you don't want to deploy. That is the purpose of being a SERVICEMEMBER.
