Question:
My Battalion Commander hates me?

My battalion commander hates me. I am a PFC. I have always received waviers for rank and was suppose to receive one for SPC. Then all of a sudden I started gaining weight. It seem no matter what I did, I was getting bigger. Everybody in my unit was treating me bad, but not the battalion commander. Even though they wanted to put me out, my battalion commander still was very nice to me and talked to me everyday ( I work in the S1 so I am close by him).

I went to the DR and they said I have an issue with my thyroid so this is why I am gaining weight and my unit can not put me out, because I have a waiver or something. Now my battalion commander doesn't talk to me. He looks at me sometime, but very quickly and he looks away. He doesn't say anything to me anymore and sometime if they are all standing around and I say something, he look at me like "why the fck are you here"

Why does he hate me? and what can I do to make him not hate me. My team leader say that the battalion commander will probably deny my promotion to specialist

PFC Yippie,

You need to concentrate on being a stellar Soldier right now. Excel during unit PT and use your off duty time to push yourself to the next level. Get your weight back down by following your doctor's orders. Study up on your Skill Level 1 and 2 tasks. Volunteer and excel in the Solider of the Month Competition. Complete correspondence courses. BE the best Soldier you can be and you won't need to wonder what everyone THINKS, they will KNOW you are a good Soldier because they SEE it everyday. Promotion is about potential, so show you have the potential to succeed on your own.

Your BN CDR is a very busy man. His change in behavior may have nothing to do with you specifically, but even if it does, prove to him your not a dirtbag joe like I said above. At the end of the day, you are the Soldier you show yourself to be. If you can prove that you are deserving of a waiver to SPC, then your Team Leader, Squad Leader/S-1 NCOIC, PLT SGT, PLT LDR, 1SG, and CO CDR will all go to bat for you. While it may seem that way right now, not getting a waiver to SPC is not the end of the world.

Many say the squeeky wheel gets the grease but I disagree. In my career, I've seen that putting your head down and working as hard as possible gets you noticed above and beyond whinning about anything.

Crash I disagree with you. You don't skate by with waviers. You get waviers because you are high speed and excell above your peers. When someone is eligible for a wavier when it comes to promotion, they give them to the best Soldiers. Sounds like this soldier was a good soldier, or they would not have been receiving waviers.

Waviers for promotion and a Wavier for exemption of the AR 600-9 standard are two different things. If you have a Thyroid condition, you will be medically waved from the standards of AR 600-9 until they can get it under control with medication and your metabolism becomes "normal".

You can however, change your diet to ensure that you are not gaining excessive weight and still be physically active. As far as your Battalion Commander, I would not worry about it.

As long as you are not flagged you will get promoted. You might not get that wavier you were promised, but you should get it automatically when its your time, unless you are flagged.

In the Army I grew up in a PFC went out of his way to avoid speaking with or coming to the attention of a LTC and especially a Battalion Commander or above. I suggest you heed that.

Second, you are not guaranteed a waiver for promotion and unless you are flagged you will be promoted to Specialist when the time comes.

Here is what I see happening...

Since you are NOW NON-DEPLOYABLE...

They will Flag you and give you an Involuntary Separation Chapter 5-17...

Don't care how good you are as a Soldier...

Being NON Depolyable makes you useless to the Army...

They are doing anything and everything to thin the ranks...

Get over it. It is not his job to like you, nor does he have to. Probably in his mind, he sees a Soldier who has skated by with waivers while so many others (including him) have had to meet the standards for promotions through normal means.
