Question:
Should I settle for NAVY ABF?
2011-03-13 23:15:47 UTC
I recently joined the NAVY I was only given the job choices ABE, ABH, and ABF.
I made a 77 on my ASVAB that was taken 2 weeks ago. I have a DUI on my record that Im sure limited my options. I have been tryin to join since Feb 2009 and the for the first year I had to have a tattoo removed from my neck that you can still see too,The last year I had to wait to get off probation. I feel as if these 3 choices do not reflect my ASVAB score and it does reflect my DUI. ABF is not a way to make a career of the NAVY for me.

DONT do it if its not the job you want, you will be miserable especially traped on a ship. Dont let the recruiters screw you tell them the job you want bottom line. When I enlisted we had to list 3 mos's we would be interested in and they would get you one of them,

Well, to be honest the Navy is trying to downgrade and they are giving out crappy MOS. To be honest, Aviation Boatswains Mate (Equipment, Handler and Fueler) doesn't reflect your asvab score at all and you will definitely be on the boat for all of those rates, but if you want to get in and that's the best they can offer, I'd say take it. I would just be careful, because coming in with one DUI already will make you a walking target already, especially if you get a DUI will serving or even an ARI (Alcohol Related Incident). You could wait until more jobs open up, but the issue might be with your security clearance with all of the legal issues you've been having and that will greatly reduce your chance of getting a good job. One thing that you MAY be able to do is join and then when it comes time for you to do your PTS (Perform to Serve) see if you can cross rate to another rate. It's not guaranteed but it's worth a shot and if you can't get a cross rate conversion then at least you can say that you did 4 years for your country. And to be honest, I have a lot of respect for the Aviation Boatswain's rates. They work their ******* asses off and as an Aviation Electricians Mate working with the ship, if it wasn't for them, we wouldn't be able to fly and successfully complete our missions. Sorry for talking so much, but good luck and best of wishes for you!

I just joined with a dui. i got a 93 on my asvab so maybe it is different but im going in as an AECF. but I think you only need a 60 or so for that program.. it just depends on what is available at that time. it depends on how bad and how fats you want in.
