How long does a military civilian hiring freeze last?

I heard that all of the military branches have put a freeze on civilian hiring until the budget can get under control. How long does these freezes usually last? Is it just for the fiscal year or could it last much longer?

I currently work for the Air Force as a civilian. But I was thinking about trying to get a job working for the Navy's Deployed Forces Support as a recreational programmer onboard a ship during deployments. If the freeze is in place I think I'm stuck where I'm at. This job and airbase is alright but I was ready for something else!

With all the difficulty with civilian jobs, do you think I should stay put until things get straightened out?

The hiring freeze could last for months or years. No one knows. Also, be aware that they are also looking at civilian furloughs.... in other words, lay-offs with NO pay. If you have a job and you have some time in, don't move. At least you have a job for now. And, depending upon the job, it may or may not be one that would be affected by a lay-off.

Also, if they do go in to a furlough situation, not everyone gets called back. Some positions just get done away with and those folks are never replaced.

Can you apply for the other job while still at your current position?

That's what I would always do with my jobs in the civilian market...I NEVER quit a job without one to go to.

As to how long the freeze will last...it 'could' last for years...or end next week.

Until they fix the budget issues (eg Congress passes an Authorization act, or otherwise averts sequestration).

Considering our elected officials have been screwing around on this issue for a year now...we should have an answer by March. One way or the other.

Stay put. Stay put, and do not try and move right now. Things are going to get worse.

Hard to say, the AMSA shop at my unit has been under a freeze for over a year now and they have a couple of spots open for mil-techs if the freeze ever ends.
