They do the same job. SF seems to do more entry control access than the army does. When I was in Baghdad we had to lay c-wire to secure the Air Force compound, but we did regular police work and some do convoy security just like the MP's. Both do LE both home and deployed and guard gates and restricted areas.

I was in a bare base set up in Baghdad so we slept in a car port till we got our tents up and we used out houses and dug latrines so it's not all fun and games in the Air Force. Cops have one of the hardest jobs in the Air Force but it can be a blast.

Both MP's and SF have security jobs and law enforcement jobs. Both sound neat, but 12 hours guarding a plane or a gate isn't gonna get a book wrote about it. SF guards planes, nukes, aerospace equipment, and the installation. Army MPs are basically the same thing cept with army equipment. Air force is doing "In lieu of" missions in iraq. That means we are rotating in and out of the same jobs as the army in the desert. After Abu Graive (spelling) the Air force took those prisoners to camp bucca where they are under AF rules.

Do you want to deploy for many months at a time and mostly see combat and be gone constantly? Then the army is for you ! Air Force Security Forces , we mostly do security but some of us lucky people get to do regular base law enforcement. We can go to every US Air Force base which mean a lot of traveling, we go on lots of TDY's to other bases as well even when we are already stationed somewhere. If you are not what is called PRP which is only security mission, guarding resources and gates and what not then most likely you will deploy quite often but not near as much as the army or as long (we deply for 6, they deploy for 9-12 months) although yes you will possibly see combat because we mostly do convoys when we are over there. We also have investigators in the sec fo, they get to dress in civilian clothes when they do their job. We train all other branches on K9. We have phoenix ravens so we can potentially get flight pay as well at some bases if you xtrain into that. So many options within the career field. That being said we have to deal with so much bs, its not even funny. What do I reccomend? NEither, please join a military branch dedicated to law enforcement. I know people rag on this branch as being lazy and what not but I reccomend the Coast Guard and become a maritime law enforcement specialist. No chance of a bad base, they are on beaches and coast, you get to deal with civilians and only do law enforcment no bs security mission or guard duty, and they have a OSI like organisation. The name escapes me. Good luck.

I am Air Force Security Forces. honestly the direction Security Forces is going is towards that of Army MP. If I were you altogether try to be a linguist instead. The Air Force will send you to Monterey, CA for at least a year to learn what ever language you are assigned. I was in Arabic myself and could keep up with listening so I washed out to go to SF. As a linguist depending on what language you are you will have the best opportunity in the outside for some good jobs or for reenlistment bonuses up to $60,000.

I was in the Army national guard. Army MP's don't earn much rank. I don't think the Air Force Security does either.

I've also got a couple of nephews in the Air Force. The Air Force has the highest standards for the comfort for their people. While the Army and Marines are in dirt floor tents. The Air Force dudes are in air conditioned facilities.

Morning. MP (Army) currently deployed. 12 years of service. Army MP's do a whole lot of different things when at home and deployed. Its ever changing from fort to fort (lots of DOD police coming in), but yes while not in the field or deployed you can fulfill LE duties, i.e. patrol. With specialized classes you can become K9, Traffic, and MPI. These are the most common. While on deployment you could end up pulling detainee guard, convoy support, Area Security, Route Recon or general LE duties among other things. Yes you would still be LE in a deployed environment if assigned.

Can’t really describe a day in the life of…. But I can tell you, while in the states, not deployed, I worked a month of LE (writing tickets, arresting DUI’s, responding to shoplifting calls, ect), then went to the field for a month, working on all the other stuff. While overseas (Korea) not deployed, it was basically the same, with more emphasis on the field.

It all depends on what fort or camp you go to and what unit you are assigned to. Some places have all LE duty units and all field units, while others have a 50% to 50% split. There are also Corps MP’s, Airborne MP’s, and Air Assault MP’s. The diversity in the MP MOS is apparent.

The Air Force side from what I have seen while working with them….. Do basically the same LE job as the Army. They do place a greater emphasis on the guard duty of facilities, planes ect. I am unsure of what, if any, field work they may do.

Go talk to recruiters. Look at official sites on the internet. Gather all the information you can before you sign something, should you chose to do so. Take someone who has been in the military and has a little knowledge of how everything should work if you sign papers. My two experiences with recruiters (yes two, I signed up, got out and came back in) they have been nothing but professionals doing their jobs for the United States Military. Good luck in your choices.

To Roadkill, I made SGT (E5) in about 3.5 years. I think your experience not earning rank was due to the rules and regulations of the National Guard. From what I understand the NG only promotes people when they have a position open. No position, no promotion. Thanks.
