Aside from the linguist MOS, can Marines in the infantry or recon MOS's request or recieve language training? Can they take training while on base? How long does it take before they are qualified?

Marines who are training to be linguists and some spec ops can receive training at DLI. Other than that, language training is very rare, although you get free access to Rosetta Stone.

No to all, they will send you to a website to learn some general words, give you a book or manual, and some training classes on how to interact with other countries, but learning a entire language will not happen unless you are Army SF

They either will get a translator from that country or use a Marine linguist (very rare)

Edit: Like everyone else says, get Rosetta Stone

(it's hard to follow as they just throw you in the language with little direction)

If your asking if a marine can be sent to DLI to learn a language.

Then the answer is no they cannot, unless they are in Force Recon or MARSOC or another position that requires a language skill.

There is just no reason for a grunt to go to DLI

There are other ways though, you will have access to Rosetta Stone on your AKO account.

The Base education center will offer language class's at times.

But you have to do those, on your off duty time.

Marines like any other branch receive language training as is needed for the job. Any service member may also use their Tuition Assistance Program to take college level language classes if it fits into a degree program. No one will be sent to any type of official training just because they want it. We don't have enough chairs in training courses for those who require the training.

It depends on what you do. Some intel jobs provide language schools. Some Recon and MARSOC will attend language schools. All military schools are very intense compared to civilian schools, you learn in 6 months what will take you 2 or 3 years in a civilian school. You spend 40 hours or more a week in class, not 10 or 15 like you do in college.

They can take courses on base but unless they are a linguist or in a job that requires the training (no infantry does not) they will not be able to study at the Defense Language Institute (DLI). I asked my recruiter if I could even take the DLAB and he said no because my job doesn't require it.

Im not sure on the details but yes Marines can get language courses as part of their higher education time. Yes i assume classes can be taken on base as well as off base.
