Question:
How does leave after AIT work, and other assorted questions?

I leave for BCT in a couple days and I have a few last minute questions since my recruiter's unavailable. I'm trying to get a little info on how leave works after AIT since my parents keep asking me about it. If I understand correctly, it's possible to get a few days of leave following AIT before reporting to your duty station. If I'm slotted for an extra school following AIT, does this come in between the two, following completion of the course, or not at all?

I was offered BAC in my contract and took it, and I was also wondering what happens if I don't successfully complete it? With hard work and a little luck, hopefully this won't be an issue, but I like to get all my ducks in a row. I understand I won't be airborne qualified, but will I be held over there or report to my duty station?

Finally, my parents are older and not in the best of health. If anything happens and they send a Red Cross message, am I obligated to take emergency leave? If so, how will this effect my training?

Thank you in advance for your answers, I know I crammed a few questions in there.

Once you finish basic training, you'll immediately go into AIT. If you have an additional school after AIT, such as Airborne School, you'll go straight there without any leave beforehand.

After your final school (AIT, airborne, whatever), you can choose to take up to two weeks of leave (depending on how much leave you actually have available). At this point can also participate in the Hometown Recruiting program, which is where you can go home for two free weeks as long as you spend a few hours a day working with your recruiter. I can't remember when you get to choose this program though. I think its at MEPS but it may be after AIT. The recruiting station has to sign off on your work during HR though, so you can't just spend the whole time home.

as for BAC (Airborne School), if you don't complete it then nothing special happens. You'll be held there for regular work details until your class graduates, but afterwards you can still take leave before going to your permanent duty station as normal.

If you receive a Red Cross message, its up to you if you go home to be with your family, but if you go in the middle of training, then whenever you get back you'll just join a class at the beginning of whatever week you were on (in AIT or Airborne), or possibly start the cycle over (if you're in BCT).

Toss me an email at hierophaant@gmail.com if you have any more questions, I'd be very glad to help with anything else before you ship out. Good luck.

you will not be allowed to take any leave until ALL of your initial training is done.. that's basic plus any and all follow on schools. the amount of time you can take for leave varies but is generally not more than 2 weeks. it is also forwned upon to request leave immediately upon arriving at any new duty station.

as for an ARC message: you will be given the choice to leave AIT and go home, and you will be told up front what the consequences will be: dropped from AIT altogether, be placed in a class at the same level you were at when you left, discharged, etc. bear in mind that not all situations will actually qualify you for Emergency leave. there has to be imminent possibility of death to qualify in most cases.
