Medical or criminal problems would exempt one from the draft. Women are not required to register for the selective service but can do so voluntarily ,and if registered a woman can be drafted.

As I said women can voluntarily register for the selective service. YES, women can be drafted though not involuntarily.

There is already drafting going on. It's called stop-loss. Which is after the person gets out, they make him go back into the military with out his consent. Look it up.

But to answer your question, only men can be drafted. Women need to watch over the children, and do other things while the men are gone.

To be exempt from a draft, you need to have a medical condtion, be a homosexual, have been in the Peace Corps, or go to college. Also, I don't think they allow many people with a criminal record to join the military anymore.

"IF" this happened- it would depend on a lot of factors. Like, is our president equal opportunity? I assume women would be included in the draft- but currently only males are asked to register.

To get out of the draft you would need to enroll in college, have a medical condition, be homosexual, etc...

I doubt this would happen anytime soon. Currently, the military is pretty full due to the economy. My sister enlisted in the Marine Corp a few years ago- she went to bootcamp two weeks later. My husband is now a Naval officer, but did a dual application where he applied for both a commission and enlisted- his earliest option for a leave date was sometime in March '10. It's really crazy. The Air Force has even stopped giving age waivers

Thrust: The Stop-loss Policy is part of our contract, it is NOT, as you say, "without consent."It may be considered "involuntary," but not against one's consent.

Your military contract states: "In the event of war, my enlistment in the Armed Forces continues until six (6) months after the war ends, unless the enlistment is ended sooner by the President of the United States."

Not only is it military procedure, but it is part of USC, stating: "... the President may suspend any provision of law relating to promotion, retirement, or separation applicable to any member of the armed forces who the President determines is essential to the national security of the United States"

To the Answerer below me: Yes, homosexuality is a reason for discharge or ineligibility.

To answer your question, only those that have applied for Selective Service may be drafted, whether it be man or woman; however, as you know, woman are not required to apply for Selective Service.

Reasons for military discharge or disqualification can be found here:

http://usmilitary.about.com/od/theorderlyroom/a/code2.htm

I recommend that you read that list as it contains the complete documentation of codes and reasons one would not be permitted in the military.

No, not drafting women would not be sexist. Who would be left on the homefront to make supplies, care for children and keep the economy going? If everyone was away at was there would be no one left to do this.

women cannot be drafted. Maybe used as nurses and work in factories to build the war machiens but never for combat.

I would imagine that it would be only men, since men are the only ones that have to register with selective service. www.sss.gov.

You would have training for your branch, than build alot of muscle, even piliots need it and then go and kick some butt. Women would be drafted too.
