How long after finishing basic are you eligible to be drafted into the war?
Do I need to get to a certain level before that's possible?
During basic training, how often am I able to contact family and will they be able to visit for any period of time?

How long until you leave depends on the MOS you choose and when hey have an opening. Basic is 8 weeks but you can be there longer if necessary. Then you go to AIT for training towards your MOS. For contacting your family you might be a allowed a few quick phone calls otherwise contact will only be through good old fashioned snail mail. The only time they can see you is at Graduation not before that.

If you are in the military already you can't be drafted. As there currently isn't a draft then you don't have to worry about it at all. You can as a Reservist/National Guard be activated for up to a certain length of time and sent overseas to places like Djibouti, Afghanistan, etc...

When I joined the army they took us real quick like 2 days after we signed the enlistment paper. When we got off the bus at the base they told me I was fat and they were, "gonna run my a-- off." I was maybe 10 lbs. overweight. I cannot stress how much you need to be in shape before you go in. Start a program of running and working out. Make sure you can do at least ten pull ups and ten push ups. We had to run 3.5 miles to the rifle range and 3.5 miles back each day. It was 8 weeks of boot camp then, maybe more now, then comes Advanced Infantry Training or AIT. No family visits, this is where baby grows up to be a soldier! Think twice, it's real and you could be killed or crippled forever. There are several thousand American amputees from Bush's War. Become a Buddhist and meditate. ~ Peace ~

As of right now, anybody who joins today won't ship to basic any earlier than October. Basic is nine weeks. You aren't "drafted" for war since you are already in. You complete your basic and AIT (job training) and then you make a Permanent Change of Station from your AIT to your first unit. You deploy when they deploy. Technically, you can deploy anytime after you finish AIT and arrive at your first unit but you will most likely not deploy for a few months after you get there. When you get to your first unit they usually give you pre-deployment training before you leave. Best case scenario, you'll get a couple of months home. Worst case scenario, you arrive at a post where they're deploying in a few weeks and you leave with them.
