I am planning on Joining the Coast Guard after I graduate. Ive looked at all the Jobs on the website and a few seem interesting. But im confused all the Jobs require A school. As I researched further there appears to be waiting lists for A school. So im asking after Boot Camp what will you do. Do you have to go to A school? Is there waiting lists?

the CG does things differently. after boot camp you will go to your first duty station/ship and you will wait until a slot opens up in A school for the rating you want. some schools have very short waiting times, others very long ones.

in the meantime you will be doing whatever scut work you are assigned with the possible opportunity to get some OJT

Most Ratings have a A school, except for BM.

After boot camp you will be assigned to a duty station. Shore Duty or a Ship. Unless you pick a rate that requires A school first then you just go to that base that has the A school and WAIT for the school to start.

You will be doing general duties while you wait.

Well, in the Army I mowed a LOT of grass and cleaned a LOT of stuff while waiting on various schools to begin...... I would imagine the Coast Guard is similar.

you will go to yo first duty assignment

and do odd jobs, help those with a Rating do thier job, maybe even work in different shops helping out to learn something of their jobs

and do a lot of KP in the kitchen

till you get sent to A School in about 6 months.
