Looking for U.S.S. Indianapolis information?

Question

I recently purchased two old WWII letters and a yard sale and they were addressed to
"A. James Kearns Jr. S1/C
U.S.S. Indianapolis, Division #7
C/O Fleet P.O.
San Francisco, CA"
The letters are from 1943, and I'm trying to find out if he was on the ship when it sank it 1945. Now, I've never tried to do any research to look up a serviceman before, so I don't really know where to start. I have done a lot of prior research of the Indianapolis, though checking their website yielded no luck. The woman I bought the letters from at the yard sale also had no idea where they came from so no dice there either. I guess I'm just looking for any useful tips on how to find information, maybe some website leads as well. Thank you!

No, he was not a member of the final crew.

There was a James A. Kearns, Jr. (1916-1993) who lived in Missouri. Don't know if he's the same one or not.
