Hi I'm 29 and I'm a senior CJ student at Texas State University. My goal is to become a police officer and become a detective(I'm sure nobody's heard that before). I'm also considering joining military reserves because I feel that it might help me in the hiring process my concern is that it may help in the hiring process, the time that I spend with things associated with the military could be used to further my career. What do you think

You're 29, there is no reason that I need to be gentle with you. Your CJ degree is next too useless unless the department you wish to join requires a degree(any degree). CJ graduates have the highest unemployment rates in the country out of any other degree(beating a LA). Close to 70% unemployment.

Now that we got that out of the way. This is my advice. Join the Reserves if you qualify. After you graduate, join or try to join the department you desire. You will get consideration for your military service over non-military applicants. IF you get hired, work a few years until you qualify for your school bennies from the Reserves. Take courses and get a degree that means something for promotion in your department. Such as "Police Management" or "Police Science". Shoot your way over more seasoned but less educated members of your department. Ask senior officers in your department what courses or degrees are best. One thing you'll learn in any PD or FD. Friends help friends(we called it "having a hook or Rabbi" in the FDNY). So make friends and gather as much knowledge as you can.

Very common combination. The only thing is you are pretty old for going into military reserves or getting employed as a LEO. Not too old, but pushing it.

Lots of cops are in the Guard and Reserves.
